Carlos Alcaraz is out of the Cincinnati Masters 1000, the tournament he lifted a year ago. The event runs 13 to 23 August and the world No 2 won’t be there. He hasn’t hit a competitive ball since retiring in the second round of the Barcelona Open back in April, a right wrist injury cutting his clay season short. Spanish outlets had floated Cincinnati as the comeback stage. The Murcian decided his body disagreed.

A comeback measured in months, not weeks
Alcaraz and his team have been playing the long game since spring, caught between the itch to compete and the dread of aggravating the wrist again. This is the latest in a run of withdrawals since April. Each one nudges the timeline further out. Now the US Open looks shaky too, because Cincinnati usually serves as the last real tune-up before the year’s final Grand Slam.
Cincinnati keeps the door open
Tournament director Bob Moran chose warmth over frustration. “We know Carlos is doing everything possible to get back into competition as soon as possible,” he said, wishing the Spaniard a quick recovery and hoping to see him back at the Lindner Family Tennis Center before long.
