F1: Albon signs on at Williams through 2027

Ninth in the standings, and a new contract anyway

Four Q1 exits in the last five qualifying sessions before the break. A car that has been carrying too much weight since testing. Ninth place in the constructors’ championship after 11 rounds.

Williams announced on Tuesday that Alex Albon has committed through the end of 2027 regardless. One more year on top of what he already had.

The paddock had spent weeks linking him elsewhere. That went quiet yesterday.

Nobody has driven more races for this team

Albon is not a passenger at Grove. Since arriving in 2022 he has started 100 Grands Prix in Williams colors, more than any driver in the team’s history.

Worth remembering how he got here. Red Bull cut him loose at the end of 2020. At 30, he has put his career back together at a team doing the same thing to itself.

“Alex has been one of the leaders of this transformation project from day one, and we still have plenty of work left to do,” said team principal James Vowles. “He is one of the best drivers on the grid and he understands better than anyone the huge progress we have made in recent years.”

Fifth last year, ninth now

Williams took fifth in the 2025 constructors’ championship. The drop to ninth this season traces back to production delays over the winter that left the car overweight before a wheel had turned in anger.

Albon has still pulled points out of it, in Miami in May and again in Monaco in June.

“A difficult year does not tell the full story, and it gives me even more motivation to keep building,” the driver said. “Our story is not over.”

Zandvoort is next, this weekend, for the Dutch Grand Prix. Albon turns up with his future settled. Whether the car has shed any weight is the other question.
