Ajax vs Willem II: ten points to two, and a Johan Cruijff Arena that does not inspire much confidence anymore 
Ajax have 10 points after five league games, while Willem II have just two. Eight points separate fifth from 17th heading into this one.
The match is on Tuesday 15 September at 20:00, at the Johan Cruijff Arena. It is the third-round fixture, pushed back and moved into midweek.
Ajax are coming off a 5-1 win at Fortuna Sittard, with the score still level at 1-1 going into the final third. Five different scorers helped finish the job in style.
That display followed a 3-1 home defeat to PSV Eindhoven. The swing sums up Míchel’s start to the season pretty neatly.
Willem II, meanwhile, snatched a 1-1 draw away to AZ Alkmaar on Friday, a result few saw coming. Devin Haen equalised 10 minutes from time after Jordy Clasie had put AZ ahead.
That point is half of their total haul since the season began. Along with ADO Den Haag, they are one of only two Eredivisie sides still without a win.
Ajax have won the last five meetings between the clubs. They completed the league double in 2021-2022 and again in 2024-2025, with Willem II going down at the end of both seasons.
League leaders AZ Alkmaar are six points clear of Ajax. A win on Tuesday would cut that gap to three before the schedule tightens up again.

Four at Telstar, five at Fortuna Sittard: away from home, Ajax are in full flow. Their last two league trips have produced nine goals.
At home, the story is very different. Ajax are now five league matches without a win at the Johan Cruijff Arena, with only two points from a possible 15, a run that stretches back into last season.
One thing does work in their favour: Ajax have scored first in nine of their last 11 matches. A fast start would take the edge off the growing unease in the stands.
Davy Klaassen got one of the five at Sittard, his fourth in five games. At 33, the midfielder remains one of the sharpest players in the squad.
Tolu Arokodare saw his scoring streak end on that same trip, but it barely dented the team’s overall attacking output. The Nigerian striker is still the main man up front.
Their recent run also included a two-legged European tie with Sion, won 4-2 away and 5-3 at home. Nine goals scored across the two matches, but eight conceded in the same stretch.
That defensive generosity has run through the season: two conceded at Heerenveen, three against PSV, one at Sittard. Ajax are winning mostly because they score more than the other lot.
Míchel is without Simon Adingra, who is still waiting for his debut after arriving on loan from Sunderland in early September 2026. The Ivory Coast winger has yet to play a minute for his new club.
The centre of defence is also missing Daley Blind and Aaron Bouwman. Blind has not played since the visit of Shelbourne in the Conference League qualifiers, a month ago.

Willem II: the league’s weakest attack and a defence still too flimsy 
Five goals in five matches: Willem II share with Telstar the lowest scoring total in the Eredivisie. Finding the net is still John Stegeman’s first problem.
The defence has not fared much better. They shipped 13 goals in their first four matches, including a 4-1 loss at Go Ahead Eagles, a 4-1 defeat to NEC and a 3-0 home beating by Excelsior.
The trip to Alkmaar showed a different side. Against a side 16 places above them, Willem II held firm and left the AFAS Stadion with a point.
Devin Haen is the symbol of that lift. His equaliser in Alkmaar confirms him as the standout player in the squad so far this season.
The injury list is still a mess, though. Jari Schuurman (back), Anass Zarrouk (operation) and Amine Lackhar (groin) will not travel to Amsterdam.
Thomas Didillon, with a hamstring issue, and Justin Hoogma, who has a knee problem, add to the list. Swedish midfielder Armin Culum is still waiting for his first Eredivisie minutes after a foot injury, while deadline-day signing Vito van Crooy is not ready yet.
Their first point of the season came in a 2-2 home draw with Heerenveen. In other words, they have found a way to scrape something from only two of their five games.
One stat sums up the size of the job: of the last five teams to still be winless after five Eredivisie matches, only Utrecht in 2023-2024 avoided relegation. Even so, Willem II are just two points above the danger zone.

Our prediction: Ajax to win and over 2.5 goals in the match
Ajax have scored nine goals in their last two league trips, at Telstar and Sittard. The attacking output is there, even if their home form still raises eyebrows.
Willem II, on the other hand, have conceded 13 goals in four matches and just shipped three at home to Excelsior. Those numbers do not exactly point to a locked-down contest.
Add in the fact that Ajax have scored first in nine of their last 11 matches and that the visitors have conceded the opening goal in five of the last six meetings between these sides, and the best fit looks to be an Ajax win with at least three goals in the game.
The one caveat is the venue, with those two points from 15 at the Johan Cruijff Arena since last season. Even so, Ajax’s attack carries more weight in the balance.
