Ajax vs Excelsior: ten goals in two matches, but four straight meetings without a win 
Ajax have scored 10 goals across their last two Eredivisie games. Back-to-back 5-1 wins, at Fortuna Sittard and then against Willem II, have quickly erased the disappointment of the Topper.
Yet the Amsterdam club have still not beaten Excelsior in the last four meetings between the sides. That awkward little stat is the storyline heading into round seven.
Kick-off is set for Saturday, September 19 at 20:00 Paris time at the Johan Cruijff ArenA.
Sitting fourth in the table, Ajax remain right in the title race.
They trail PSV Eindhoven and AZ Alkmaar by just three points, with the co-leaders on 16, so the Amsterdam side are still leading the pack just behind them.
A win, along with a few helpful results elsewhere, could leave Ajax top by the end of the day. The margin for error is still there, even after the slip against PSV.
Excelsior are sixth, which is a surprise for the Rotterdam club at this stage of the season. Conceding only seven goals in six matches has done plenty to explain that ranking.
They are also unbeaten away from home, with seven points from three trips. That carries real weight before a visit to the country’s biggest ground.
Ajax: the attack is firing again, and this one feels different 
A 3-1 defeat at the Johan Cruijff Arena against the Eindhoven rivals had all the hallmarks of a disaster for Ajax. In danger of being cut adrift in the title race and slipping into self-doubt, the Amsterdam side had to respond, and fast.
The answer on the pitch from Michel’s men was as sharp as it was brutal.
10 goals in two league matches, including five against a Fortuna Sittard side who had been in good form, pushed Ajax back into the leading group. The 5-1 against Willem II, a rearranged match from round three, confirmed the trend.
One stat stands out before Excelsior arrive. Ajax have not put together three straight Eredivisie wins since December 2025.
The goals are being shared around, too. Kasper Dolberg scored once and set up two more against Willem II, leaving Michel with a call to make alongside Tolu Arokodare.
Oscar Gloukh has been involved in three goals across the last two outings. Julian Brandt, meanwhile, has scored in back-to-back matches.
The treatment room is still busy in Amsterdam, though. Aaron Bouwman is still dealing with a bruised lung after the clash in the Topper, while Daley Blind and Simon Adingra, both out with ankle issues, are also unavailable.
Right now, Ajax are thrilling more than they are controlling games. Each of their last eight matches has produced at least three goals, and they have led at half-time in four of their last five.

Excelsior: Ajax’s bogey side 
Seven goals conceded in six rounds and two clean sheets: that defensive solidity has been the hallmark of Ruben den Uil’s side. It’s the main reason the Rotterdam club sit sixth.
Their away form is even more impressive. Seven points from three trips, still unbeaten, and now they head to the biggest stadium in the country.
The last two rounds have brought a small wobble, though. A 2-2 draw with NEC Nijmegen was followed by a 2-1 home defeat to FC Utrecht, with two goals conceded in both games.
Their record against Ajax is the visitors’ biggest psychological edge. Excelsior are unbeaten in four straight meetings in this fixture, having gone 18 years without a win and then lost six on the spin.
The run began with a 2-2 draw in August 2023, continued with two more draws by the same score, and peaked last season. Rotterdam then won 2-1 away at the capital club.
Three players are carrying the attack right now. David Garden, Irakli Yegoian and Aymen Sliti have been involved in nine goals between them over the last five matches.
Noah Naujoks is still a doubt for the trip. The striker has not played since his opening-day brace.
Their season since August explains their place in the table. Excelsior started with a 4-0 win at Cambuur before losing only 2-1 to PSV Eindhoven at home.
Two more wins followed straight after, 2-1 against Sparta Rotterdam and 3-0 at Willem II. That ability to win away from home is the reason they have seven points from three trips. They will need every bit of it against Ajax!
