Aberdeen vs St Johnstone: eight points each, and a visiting side still looking for an away win Scottish Premiership

Eight points each after seven games. Aberdeen are seventh, St Johnstone sixth, and only goal difference splits them. Sunday’s meeting at Pittodrie, kick-off 15:00 Paris time, is about as balanced as the Scottish Premiership table gets.

The form lines, though, are heading in different directions. Aberdeen are unbeaten in three league games, including a 4-0 win at Motherwell and a 1-1 draw at Hibernian before the break. St Johnstone were held 1-1 at home by Falkirk in their last outing and haven’t won on the road all season.

Context matters here. St Johnstone are back in the top flight after winning promotion from the Championship last term, and Simo Valakari’s main target is survival. Two wins, two draws and three defeats is a decent return for a promoted side, and it puts them three points clear of 12th-placed Kilmarnock.

Aberdeen’s season has been harder to read. Stephen Robinson’s side won all four League Cup group games, scoring 11 and conceding two, then beat Hearts 2-1 on the opening day with two goals in stoppage time. A run of three straight league defeats to Dundee, Rangers and Celtic followed.

They’ve steadied since. A League Cup quarter-final win on penalties at Kilmarnock booked a semi-final place, and the league results have picked up.

The recent head-to-head favours the hosts too. Aberdeen are unbeaten in the last three meetings, and St Johnstone haven’t beaten them since a 2-0 win in February 2024. Can the Saints change that on a ground where they’ve rarely looked comfortable? It’d take their best away display of the season.

Aberdeen: Nisbet’s 12 goals and a side finding its rhythm again Aberdeen

Kevin Nisbet has been the story of Aberdeen’s season so far. Twelve goals in all competitions, three of them in the league, and he’s the obvious focal point again on Sunday.

The league tally is the interesting bit. Nine of those goals came in the cups, which tells you Aberdeen have been more potent against weaker opposition. Against St Johnstone at home, that’s the kind of game Nisbet has been feasting on.

The 4-0 win at Motherwell showed what this side looks like when it clicks. The 0-0 draw with Kilmarnock showed the other side of it. Robinson’s team can be blunt, and their league record of three wins in seven doesn’t scream dominance.

Team news is fairly kind. Bradley Lyons, Emmanuel Gyamfi and Kristers Tobers are out injured, but the rest of the squad is available. Ronan and Marshall should line up in a busy midfield, with Olusanya alongside Nisbet up top.

The cup run matters for confidence too. Winning all four group games and then getting past Kilmarnock in the quarter-finals has given this squad a semi-final to look forward to, and there’s no sign of that distracting them from league business.

Pittodrie should give them an edge. The early-season defeats came against Dundee and the two Old Firm clubs, and the Dons will see this as a game they’re expected to win.

St Johnstone: goals in five of seven, but no win away from McDiarmid Park St Johnstone

The away record is where St Johnstone’s problem lies. Three league trips, two defeats and a draw: 1-0 at St Mirren, 2-1 at Hearts and 1-1 at Dundee.

The three most recent meetings between the clubs tell a similar story: a 2-1 Aberdeen win in Perth in August 2024, a 1-1 draw at Pittodrie that December and a 0-0 stalemate in March 2025. Tight games, but St Johnstone haven’t found a way to win any of them.

That’s not a disaster for a promoted side. It’s also not the kind of record you’d want to take to Pittodrie.

The positive is that they do score. St Johnstone have found the net in five of their seven league games, scoring nine and conceding 10, and five of their matches have seen both teams score. Their 2-1 home win over Hibernian showed they can trouble decent sides.

Defensive changes are forced on Valakari this weekend. Cheick Diabate was sent off in the Falkirk draw and is suspended, so Morgan Boyes and Danny Finlayson are expected to form a new centre-back partnership. Zach Mitchell is out for the season with a cruciate ligament injury, and Jamie Gullan is a doubt.

A reshuffled back line on the road against a team with a 12-goal striker makes for uncomfortable reading. St Johnstone will need their midfield pair, McAlear and Holt, to protect that defence far better than they did at Hearts.

Probable lineup Aberdeen: Muller; Milne, Knoester, Molloy; Cadden, Ronan, Marshall, Afeez, Guinness-Walker; Olusanya, Nisbet
Probable lineup St Johnstone: Steward; Smith, Finlayson, Boyes, Alic; McAlear, Holt; Campbell, Cotterill, Steven; Fowler

Free Football Prediction: Aberdeen vs St Johnstone

Our prediction: Aberdeen to win (odds around 2.25)

The table says this is close. The detail says otherwise. St Johnstone haven’t won away, they’re missing a suspended centre-back and they haven’t beaten Aberdeen in their last three attempts. Aberdeen are unbeaten in three and have the most in-form striker on the pitch.

The one caveat is that St Johnstone usually score. A 2-1 home win, with the visitors grabbing a goal, looks the most natural outcome, and that doesn’t hurt a straight Aberdeen win.

At around 2.25, Aberdeen to win is our pick. Kevin Nisbet to score anytime, at around 2.60, is a sensible add-on for anyone looking for a bigger price.

About our free predictions

  • What we publish on MathOdds are analyses, nothing more. We share a view, a reading of the moment, but never a guarantee. Sport remains what it is: unpredictable. A red card, an injury, a last-minute goal, and the script changes completely.
  • Let’s be clear: there is no such thing as a risk-free bet. Even when it looks “obvious”, nothing ever is. And yes, that means you can lose. It’s even inevitable at some point.
  • The smartest approach is to stay reasonable. Bet small, set a budget and stick to it. Never use money you need to live on. And above all: don’t chase your losses, that rarely ends well.
  • A bet should remain a game, not a job or a source of income. If it starts taking up too much space in your daily life, causes stress or frustration, take a break. And if needed, talk to a support organisation: that’s what they’re there for.
  • Ultimately, responsibility lies with you. Reading our content means accepting that risk exists and will never disappear, no matter how good the analysis.
  • Essential reminder: gambling is prohibited for minors and must comply with the laws of your country. Need help? Visit begambleaware.org.
