New York Rangers vs Utah Mammoth: the NHL’s hottest attack runs into a wall at the Garden NHL

Ten goals scored, one conceded. That is Utah’s start to the 2026-27 season, and it is exactly the kind of number that pushes a market in the wrong direction.

The Mammoth carry that perfect 2-0-0 record into Madison Square Garden on Sunday 4 October, with puck drop at 6:00 p.m. ET. In Paris, that means midnight, in the first minutes of Monday 5 October.

The New York Rangers wait for them at 2-1-0, with four points of their own. Same points total, completely different profiles.

Utah buried Chicago 6-0 in its home opener, then handled Columbus 4-1. Dylan Guenther has led the charge, and the power play has been converting at a rate no team sustains over an 84-game schedule.

New York has built its start on the opposite principle. Four goals allowed in three games, a 2-0 shutout win in Detroit on Friday, and a structure that makes opponents pay for every inch of the slot.

So the real question is simple. Can a team living off transition and special teams break down a defense designed to deny exactly that? Our answer is no, and the price on the home side still leaves room to back it.

New York Rangers Analysis New York Rangers

The Rangers’ identity is already clear: concede little, win the low-event games. Four goals against in three outings is not luck, it is a team protecting the middle of the ice and killing second chances.

Adam Fox remains the engine from the back end. He logged a team-high 22:50 in his last outing with an assist and two shots, and his first pass is what lets New York escape pressure without panic.

The crease is the only real noise. Joonas Korpisalo sits on injured reserve with a lower-body injury, which leaves Igor Shesterkin and Dylan Garand to share the work.

Shesterkin started the first two games, then Garand posted his first NHL shutout in Detroit. The starter for Sunday was not confirmed at the time of writing, and frankly, New York’s system does not need a goalie to steal games.

Up front, Mika Zibanejad centers Gabriel Perreault and Alexis Lafreniere, while J.T. Miller drives a second line with Oliver Bjorkstrand and Pavel Dorofeyev. Eeli Tolvanen, who joined on a one-year deal this summer, was part of the Detroit win.

The penalty kill has also opened strongly. Against a Utah team that has leaned on its power play, that single detail could decide the night.

Utah Mammoth Analysis Utah Mammoth

Utah’s start is real. Nobody scores six on Chicago and four on Columbus by accident, and a plus-nine goal differential after two games says this roster has teeth.

The summer explains a lot. General manager Bill Armstrong added Vincent Trocheck and Anders Lee, giving Andre Tourigny more bite through the middle and more experience in front of the net.

Guenther has been the sharpest weapon so far. Mikhail Sergachev keeps feeding the attack from the blue line, with a goal, an assist, four shots and 22:01 of ice time in his last game.

The problem is sustainability. Utah’s shooting, power-play and save numbers are all running at levels that will cool, and the Rangers’ penalty kill is a far tougher test than anything the Mammoth faced at home or in Columbus.

The back end also took a hit before the opener. Maveric Lamoureux underwent shoulder surgery and is expected to miss four to six months, removing size and mobility from a defense that will need both in Manhattan.

If New York forces Utah to defend through long cycles, the Mammoth will need more than rush offense. That is not the game they have played so far, and it is not a game they have proven they can win.

Probable lineup New York Rangers: Shesterkin or Garand (not confirmed); Perreault – Zibanejad – Lafreniere; Bjorkstrand – Miller – Dorofeyev; Cuylle – Laba – Tolvanen; Kartye – Veleno – Chmelar; Gavrikov – Fox; Pettersson – Durzi; Smits – Schneider.
Probable lineup Utah Mammoth: Vejmelka; Keller – Schmaltz – Trocheck; Lee – Cooley – Guenther; McBain – Hayton – Crouse; Carcone – Stenlund – But; Sergachev – Weegar; Schmidt – Marino; Simashev – Peeke.

Free NHL Prediction: New York Rangers vs Utah Mammoth

Our prediction: New York Rangers to win (moneyline) at around 1.75

Utah’s 2-0 start is legitimate, but it rests on percentages that are already running hot. New York is built to attack precisely those strengths: it limits rush chances, protects the slot and has a penalty kill capable of switching off the Mammoth’s favourite weapon.

Home ice matters too. The Rangers control matchups at the Garden, and a low-event script, the one they have already won twice this season, pushes the pressure onto Utah to manufacture five-on-five offense it has not needed so far.

The price seals it. New York opened shorter in some markets and has drifted toward 1.75, which is a fair number for the more structured team at home. We back the Rangers in a tight game, something like 3-2.

About our free predictions

  • What we publish on MathOdds are analyses, nothing more. We share a view, a reading of the moment, but never a guarantee. Sport remains what it is: unpredictable. A red card, an injury, a last-minute goal, and the script changes completely.
  • Let’s be clear: there is no such thing as a risk-free bet. Even when it looks “obvious”, nothing ever is. And yes, that means you can lose. It’s even inevitable at some point.
  • The smartest approach is to stay reasonable. Bet small, set a budget and stick to it. Never use money you need to live on. And above all: don’t chase your losses, that rarely ends well.
  • A bet should remain a game, not a job or a source of income. If it starts taking up too much space in your daily life, causes stress or frustration, take a break. And if needed, talk to a support organisation, that’s what they’re there for.
  • Ultimately, responsibility lies with you. Reading our content means accepting that risk exists and will never disappear, no matter how good the analysis.
  • Essential reminder: gambling is prohibited for minors and must comply with the laws of your country. Need help? Visit begambleaware.org.

Information changes

A prediction is always based on what we know at the time of writing. But between publication and kick-off, a lineup can change, a player picks up an injury, the weather turns, and the analysis can quickly be outdated. We cannot be held responsible for that.
