Ukraine vs Hungary: two teams on four points, only one of them rising
Ukraine won the first meeting. They have not won since, and that is the story of this rematch.
Ukraine face Hungary on Monday 5 October at the City Arena in Trnava, Slovakia, with kick-off at 20:45 Paris time (19:45 UK). Ukraine are the nominal hosts, but this is a neutral venue, and that changes the balance of the game.
This is matchday four of League B, Group 2. Both teams sit on four points behind leaders Northern Ireland, so the winner takes a clear step towards the top two.
On 25 September, Danylo Sikan scored just before half-time to give Ukraine a 1-0 win in Hungary. Since then, Andrea Maldera’s side have drawn 0-0 with Georgia and lost 3-0 to Northern Ireland.
Hungary went the other way. After that opening defeat, Marco Rossi’s team drew 0-0 in Belfast and then beat Georgia 1-0 in Budapest on Friday.
Two trends cross in Trnava. Ukraine are sliding, Hungary are steadying, and the absentee list hits the hosts’ attack hardest.
Ukraine Analysis
The 1-0 win in Hungary was Maldera’s first competitive victory since his appointment in May. It is still his only one.
The Georgia draw cost two points, and the 3-0 defeat to Northern Ireland on Friday exposed a defence that had looked solid in the opening round. Ukraine have now scored once in three Nations League games.
The absences make things worse. Sikan, the goalscorer in the first meeting, is suspended after collecting too many bookings, and defender Mykola Matviyenko serves a ban for the same reason.
Left-back Vitaliy Mykolenko has left the camp injured, and Oleksandr Zinchenko is listed out with a twisted knee. Maldera is expected to field a back four of Valeriy Bondar, Illia Zabarnyi, Eduard Sarapiy and Bohdan Mykhaylichenko.
Roman Yaremchuk takes over as the central striker. Georgiy Sudakov and Viktor Tsygankov will have to carry the creative load behind him.

Hungary Analysis
Hungary have grown into this campaign. The opening loss to Ukraine ended a four-game unbeaten run in which they scored six and conceded two.
Since then: a 0-0 in Belfast and a 1-0 win over Georgia at the Puskas Arena. Milos Kerkez headed the winner on Friday, and it is still Hungary’s only goal of the Nations League.
That lack of goals is the obvious weakness. The strength is away from home, where Hungary are unbeaten in five and have kept back-to-back clean sheets on the road.
Kerkez is suspended for this one after a yellow card against Georgia, with Akos Markgraf expected to replace him. Right-back Bendeguz Bolla is out with an ankle injury, so Attila Osvath should fill that flank, while Damir Redzic and Barnabas Varga are also sidelined.
The key news is positive. Dominik Szoboszlai was substituted early on Friday, but the change was precautionary, and Hungary’s main creative force is available to drive the midfield.
Probable lineup Ukraine: Riznyk; Bondar, Zabarnyi, Sarapiy, Mykhaylichenko; Brazhko; Yarmolenko, Ocheretko, Tsygankov, Sudakov; Yaremchuk
Probable lineup Hungary: B. Toth; Osvath, Orban, Csinger, Markgraf; Schafer, Szoboszlai; Lukacs, A. Toth, Nagy; M. Toth

Our prediction: Hungary to win @ 3.00
Ukraine have lost the scorer of the first meeting and a suspended centre-back, plus Mykolenko and Zinchenko, and they arrive after a 3-0 defeat that dented their confidence. Playing in Slovakia gives them none of the usual home edge.
Hungary have Szoboszlai, a road record of five unbeaten with two straight clean sheets, and the momentum of a win on Friday. They have lost only once in their last seven matches.
This will be tight and low on goals, but the better-organised side with the better player wins it. Back Hungary at 3.00.

About our free predictions
- What we publish on MathOdds are analyses, nothing more. We share a view, a reading of the moment, but never a guarantee. Sport remains what it is: unpredictable. A red card, an injury, a last-minute goal: and the script changes completely.
- Let’s be clear: there is no such thing as a risk-free bet. Even when it looks “obvious”, nothing ever is. And yes, that means you can lose. It’s even inevitable at some point.
- The smartest approach is to stay reasonable. Bet small, set a budget and stick to it. Never use money you need to live on. And above all: don’t chase your losses, that rarely ends well.
- A bet should remain a game, not a job or a source of income. If it starts taking up too much space in your daily life, causes stress or frustration, take a break. And if needed, talk to a support organisation, that’s what they’re there for.
- Ultimately, responsibility lies with you. Reading our content means accepting that risk exists and will never disappear, no matter how good the analysis.
- Essential reminder: gambling is prohibited for minors and must comply with the laws of your country. Need help? Visit begambleaware.org.

Information changes
A prediction is always based on what we know at the time of writing. But between publication and kick-off, a lineup can change, a player picks up an injury, the weather turns, and the analysis can quickly be outdated. We cannot be held responsible for that.
