Comoros vs Senegal: a first-ever meeting under the Velodrome lights International Friendly

Comoros and Senegal meet for the first time at senior international level on Sunday 4 October. The friendly takes place at the Stade Velodrome in Marseille, with kick-off at 15:00 Paris time.

Comoros are the designated home side for this neutral-venue fixture. Tickets were put on sale from 15 euros, and the Velodrome gives this friendly a real sense of occasion.

Both teams come into the game on the back of wins in 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying. Comoros beat Namibia 1-0 in Moroni, while Senegal won 1-0 in Ethiopia on Tuesday.

The gap between the two is still wide on paper. Sports Mole points out that Senegal sit around 90 places above Comoros in the FIFA rankings.

Each camp is also in a new cycle. Hubert Velud has replaced Stefano Cusin on the Comoros bench, and Patrick Vieira has taken over Senegal after Pape Thiaw’s departure following the World Cup.

Vieira’s start has been judged a little underwhelming, with a 1-1 draw in Mozambique followed by that narrow win in Ethiopia. Four points from two games is fine, but the attacking output has been thin.

That is why this friendly matters for Senegal. Against a lower-ranked side, the Lions of Teranga are expected to show more in front of goal.

AfricaSoccer reports that both teams to score is priced at 2.60, with a 1-1 draw at 10. Those numbers show that bookmakers still expect a clear Senegal advantage.

Senegal’s recent results need context. Their defeats came against France, Norway and Belgium at the World Cup, and they also beat Iraq 5-0 in the same tournament.

Comoros, by contrast, have won only twice in their last 11 matches before this window. That gap in recent pedigree is the starting point of our analysis.

Comoros Analysis Comoros

Velud knows African football well, having previously managed Togo, Sudan and Burkina Faso. His Comoros tenure began with a 3-1 defeat in Cameroon, a tough opening assignment away from home.

The home debut went much better. Comoros beat Namibia 1-0, their first competitive win in ten months, thanks to a goal from right-back Benjaloud Youssouf.

Youssouf is the player to watch. The 32-year-old Sochaux defender was involved in both of Comoros’ goals during this window, with an assist in Cameroon and the winner against Namibia.

The attack has improved recently, although Comoros have only scored once per game during that run. That modest output is the main limit for Velud.

Against a side with Senegal’s defensive quality, one goal may not be enough to get a result.

Yannick Pandor is expected to keep his place in goal after a composed display against Namibia. He is likely to be busy in Marseille.

Comoros have scored in each of their past four matches in all competitions, according to AfricaSoccer. Bendjaloud Youssouf and Zaydou Youssouf have each produced a goal and an assist across their last three games.

Velud’s side have also averaged more than five corners per match in their two official fixtures. That suggests they can push forward in spells, even against stronger opponents.

Senegal Analysis Senegal

Senegal’s World Cup ended painfully, with a 3-2 defeat to Belgium after they had come close to the last 16. Pape Thiaw left despite his earlier AFCON success, and Vieira was handed the job.

The new coach has kept things tight so far. A 1-1 draw with Mozambique and a 1-0 win in Ethiopia show a solid base, but not yet the attacking flow fans expect.

Help is arriving up front. Iliman Ndiaye and Ismaila Sarr are available for the first time under Vieira after serving CAF suspensions linked to the AFCON final.

Ibrahim Mbaye is in good form as well. The Aston Villa winger scored his fifth goal in 17 caps against Ethiopia and remains one of the brightest prospects in the squad.

There is one notable absence. Moussa Niakhate, who captained Senegal in both qualifiers, has been released to his club after picking up an injury.

Vieira is expected to rotate and give minutes to a wider group. Even so, the depth of his squad should leave Senegal much stronger than their opponents.

Senegal have scored at least once in each of their past six matches and have taken the lead in their last four official games. Those patterns point to a side that usually controls the scoreboard early.

They have also averaged six corners per match in the opening qualifiers. Expect them to dominate territory against a Comoros side likely to defend deep.

Free Football Prediction: Comoros vs Senegal

Our prediction: Senegal to win (odds around 1.63)

Senegal have a big quality advantage, extra firepower with Ndiaye and Sarr back, and a coach who needs a convincing display after two tight results. Comoros have improved under Velud, but they are scoring only once per game and face a much stronger defence here.

Sports Mole predicts a 3-0 Senegal win and other previews also expect the Lions of Teranga to come out on top. Odds for a Senegal win sit between 1.63 and 1.70 depending on the bookmaker.

We back Senegal to win in Marseille. A two-goal margin looks realistic if Vieira’s attackers find their rhythm early.

About our free predictions

  • What we publish on MathOdds are analyses, nothing more. We share a view, a reading of the moment, but never a guarantee. Sport remains what it is: unpredictable. A red card, an injury, a last-minute goal — and the script changes completely.
  • Let’s be clear: there is no such thing as a risk-free bet. Even when it looks “obvious”, nothing ever is. And yes, that means you can lose. It’s even inevitable at some point.
  • The smartest approach is to stay reasonable. Bet small, set a budget and stick to it. Never use money you need to live on. And above all: don’t chase your losses — that rarely ends well.
  • A bet should remain a game, not a job or a source of income. If it starts taking up too much space in your daily life, causes stress or frustration, take a break. And if needed, talk to a support organisation — that’s what they’re there for.
  • Ultimately, responsibility lies with you. Reading our content means accepting that risk exists and will never disappear, no matter how good the analysis.
  • Essential reminder: gambling is prohibited for minors and must comply with the laws of your country. Need help? Visit begambleaware.org.
