San Francisco 49ers vs Denver Broncos: a 3-0 record against a long injury report
Nine touchdown passes against one interception. Brock Purdy’s efficiency is the first number anyone sees when looking at this game, but it is not the only one that matters.
The San Francisco 49ers host the Denver Broncos on Sunday 4 October at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, in Week 4 of the NFL season. Kick-off is at 4:25 p.m. ET, which means 22:25 Paris time.
San Francisco come in at 3-0 after a 36-30 win over Arizona. Denver are 2-1 after rallying past the Los Angeles Rams 30-26.
The spread opened around San Francisco -2.5 and has settled on the key number of -3. The total has also climbed, from roughly 46.5 to 47.5 points.
On the moneyline, the 49ers are priced at 1.68 and Denver at 2.24. That is a modest gap for a home team with a perfect record, and the reason sits in the practice reports.
San Francisco’s injury list now touches edge rusher, linebacker, offensive tackle and receiver. Denver’s report is considerably cleaner, which is the central variable in this analysis.
The question is not who is more likely to win. It is whether a three-point cushion on Denver is worth more than San Francisco’s home advantage in a game projected to stay within one possession.
San Francisco 49ers Analysis
The offense remains the strength. Purdy’s nine touchdowns against one interception place him among the most efficient quarterbacks in the league through three weeks.
Christian McCaffrey adds a second layer. He practiced fully after a rest day and forces opposing defenses to cover every horizontal gap on the field.
The problems start on defense. Nick Bosa missed Thursday practice with knee and calf injuries, and Dre Greenlaw also sat out with a quadriceps issue.
Losing both removes the main pass rusher and a key second-level tackler. That reduces San Francisco’s ability to get Denver off the field on third down.
The offense is not untouched either. Mike Evans remained out with a rib injury, while Trent Williams returned only on a limited basis after a neck stinger.
Kyle Shanahan can still build offense around missing starters, and that is why the 49ers remain favored. The accumulation of absences, however, lowers the chance of a clean four-quarter performance.

Denver Broncos Analysis
Denver arrive with momentum built in the second half of games. Bo Nix and the offense have shown better rhythm after the break over the last two weeks, culminating in the 30-26 comeback against the Rams.
The injury situation favors the visitors. Denver’s report is considerably cleaner than San Francisco’s, which matters in a game priced this tightly.
The defensive plan is clear. The Broncos have enough talent up front to prevent Purdy from playing a completely clean game, even if they cannot stop him outright.
Tackling after the catch is the key detail. San Francisco’s system generates yards through short completions that turn into big gains, so Denver must limit what happens after the reception.
Keeping Purdy out of second-and-short is the other condition. If the 49ers face longer third downs, their injured offensive line and missing receiver become more visible.
Denver do not need a shootout to stay close. A controlled, defense-driven game suits them, and it also keeps the margin inside a field goal for longer.
Probable lineup San Francisco 49ers: QB Brock Purdy; RB Christian McCaffrey (full practice); OT Trent Williams limited (neck); DE Nick Bosa (knee, calf), LB Dre Greenlaw (quad) and WR Mike Evans (rib) uncertain to out. Full depth chart not announced at time of publication.
Probable lineup Denver Broncos: QB Bo Nix. No major injury concerns reported. Full depth chart not announced at time of publication.
Free NFL Prediction: San Francisco 49ers vs Denver Broncos
Our prediction: Denver Broncos +3 (handicap) @ 1.83
San Francisco can remain the more likely winner while Denver still own the better position on the spread. The 49ers are missing their top pass rusher, a starting linebacker and a starting receiver, with their left tackle limited, and that weighs against a comfortable home win.
Both previews consulted this week land on Denver +3, with one projecting a 24-23 San Francisco win. A one-point loss, a push at three or an outright Broncos win all return at least the stake on this line.
The risk is Purdy’s efficiency and yards after the catch. Even so, a healthier Denver roster with improving second-half form is well placed to keep this inside a field goal.

About our free predictions
- What we publish on MathOdds are analyses, nothing more. We share a view, a reading of the moment, but never a guarantee. Sport remains what it is: unpredictable. A red card, an injury, a last-minute goal, and the script changes completely.
- Let’s be clear: there is no such thing as a risk-free bet. Even when it looks “obvious”, nothing ever is. And yes, that means you can lose. It’s even inevitable at some point.
- The smartest approach is to stay reasonable. Bet small, set a budget and stick to it. Never use money you need to live on. And above all: don’t chase your losses, that rarely ends well.
- A bet should remain a game, not a job or a source of income. If it starts taking up too much space in your daily life, causes stress or frustration, take a break. And if needed, talk to a support organisation, that’s what they’re there for.
- Ultimately, responsibility lies with you. Reading our content means accepting that risk exists and will never disappear, no matter how good the analysis.
