$200 million on the table
Two hundred million dollars, over five years. That’s the offer the Pistons just put in front of Jalen Duren.
It’s actually more than he’d get by testing free agency next summer, where his max deal would land around $189 million over four years. Detroit is offering more money, spread over more time. Nothing is signed yet, though.
Try it for $0.99.
A chill that’s lingered for months
Duren is holding a $9.6 million qualifying offer. Take it, and he becomes an unrestricted free agent in 2027. He’s watching that option closely.
According to ESPN, the center feels he’s been treated poorly by the franchise. A thread of disrespect has run through the earlier extension talks, strong words, and they’re coming from inside the story.
Losing a center of his caliber for nothing would sting badly for Detroit. Several US observers already rank him among the best big men at his position.
What if this turns into a standoff?
The October 1 deadline is closing in fast. That’s the cutoff to accept the qualifying offer, unless both sides agree to push it back.
If Duren turns down the $200 million, Detroit will need to move fast. A sign-and-trade is one route being floated. Sacramento and Milwaukee keep coming up in the chatter. Myles Turner is already being mentioned as the fallback option at center.
Nothing’s settled. The clock is ticking.
