Three defeats in seven days
Three games. Three losses. That’s the week Celtic have just lived through, and it’s the worst stretch of their season so far. Two of those came against bitter rivals Rangers, first in the League Cup quarter-finals, then in the league. A home defeat to Ferencvaros in the Europa League rounded it off.
After the second loss to Rangers, Martin O’Neill left the door open on his own future. “Maybe it’s time to stop,” he admitted, a rare flash of candor from a manager already on his third spell in charge at Parkhead.

The board steps in
Chief executive Michael Nicholson didn’t dance around it. “Last week’s defeats hurt all of us,” he said, before promising the club would “come together and support Martin and the players.” It’s a show of backing that sits awkwardly next to the doubt now swirling around the club.
This slump didn’t come out of nowhere. Last month, Celtic blew a 4-0 first-leg lead and crashed out of the Champions League against LASK. That defeat left scars in the away dressing room.
A third stint under real pressure
O’Neill came back to lead Celtic in the summer of 2026, the third time he’s taken the job. He’d already filled in twice before, once after Brendan Rodgers departed, and again following Wilfried Nancy’s 33-day spell. This time round, the plan was for some stability. Instead, the wheels have come off fast.
