A new man in charge
Sebastien Pocognoli officially takes the reins at Scotland this week. The Belgian coach has already linked up with his squad in La Manga, Spain, ahead of Friday’s must-win opener against Slovenia.
Five new faces made his first squad list. Blackburn midfielder Kristi Montgomery is one of them, called up after Kieran Tierney and Kenny McLean withdrew. It’s an early signal that he means business.

A packed schedule to start with
There’s no time to ease in. After Slovenia on September 26, Scotland face Switzerland just three days later, then North Macedonia on October 3, before a rematch with the Slovenians on October 6. Four matches in 12 days to open a new era.
“We have a good mix,” Pocognoli said of his squad, pointing to the blend of experience and younger talent. The message is simple. No sweeping revolution, just targeted tweaks.
Starting again from League B
Scotland dropped into Nations League B after a play-off defeat to Greece sealed relegation last year. Pocognoli inherits a side that needs to climb back up.
His priorities, as he’s laid them out, are squad unity, clear principles, developing young talent, and collective spirit. That should be enough to set the tone before kickoff against Slovenia.
