RC Toulon vs RC Vannes: three defeats, three bonus points and a full-blown emergency at Mayol 
Toulon are the only Top 14 side to pick up a bonus point in each of their three defeats. Three games, three losses, three points on the board anyway.
That odd little twist leaves RCT 13th, just above RC Vannes and their zero-point start. The two clubs meet on Saturday 26 September at 16:35 at Stade Mayol.
The attacking numbers already separate the pair: Toulon have scored 73 points, Vannes 55. And the gap widens at the other end, with 77 points conceded by the Var side and 84 by the Bretons.
The points difference says it all: -4 for Toulon, -29 for Vannes. RCT are losing by a whisker; RCV are getting properly beaten.
Round 3 underlined that difference. Toulon went down 29-27 at Castres, while Vannes lost 23-29 at home to Stade Toulousain.
The stakes make this a huge one for both clubs. It is the meeting of the bottom two, and the loser will be staring at the season with a proper knot in the stomach.
The structure of the league gives this game extra weight: 13th at the end of the season faces a promotion play-off against the Pro D2 runner-up, while 14th goes down straight away. Those are exactly the two spots Toulon and Vannes occupy right now.
Three points and one place separate the clubs. The winner gets a real shot of oxygen before the schedule starts biting.
RC Toulon: no wins, but the fifth-best defence in the league 
With 77 points conceded in three rounds, Toulon have the fifth-best defence in the Top 14. Only Montpellier, UBB, Stade Toulousain and Stade Rochelais are doing better.
That defensive record sits in brutal contrast to the results column: three defeats from three. RCT are the only side in the division to pair a top-end defence with a blank in the wins column.
The three bonus points show how tight the margins have been. Across the season so far, the combined deficit is only 4 points, which is almost absurd for a team without a win.
Last time out proved the point. Beaten 29-27 at Castres, the Var club were just two points away from a first victory. The defensive bonus at least gave them something to show for it.
The attack is doing a decent job, with 73 points scored, 18 more than their opponents here. Toulon’s issue is not production. It is finishing when it matters, especially in the final 10 minutes.
Hosting the bottom side at Mayol is therefore as good a chance as they have had all season. Fail here, and Toulon’s campaign starts to drift into dangerous territory.
RCT are only one point behind Stade Francais and Racing 92, both on 4. A first win would drag them straight back into the pack.
Toulon have lost all three games, but never by much. Their total deficit of 4 points is still the lowest in the bottom half of the table.

RC Vannes: no points, no bonus, the weakest attack down the bottom 
Vannes are the only Top 14 side still stuck on zero points after three rounds. Three defeats, no attacking bonus, no defensive bonus.
Their 55 points scored is the 13th-best attacking return in the league, ahead of only Stade Francais. RCV are averaging a little over 18 points per game.
At the back, the 84 points conceded put the Bretons sixth in the standings, which is far from disastrous. Their -29 difference is caused far more by a lack of scoring than by any real defensive fragility.
Round 3 showed Vannes at their best so far this season. Against second-placed Stade Toulousain, RCV lost 23-29 at home but stayed in the fight right to the end.
That game showed Vannes can hang with the big guns, but none of their three opponents have been beaten. There is still a big gap between competing and actually winning.
The trip to Mayol is a proper test of their level. Vannes are finally up against a side below them in the table, after three opening rounds spent chasing the pace of the competition.
RCV are the only Top 14 team still on zero points after three rounds. Three points separate them from Toulon.
The Breton club have lost every game without once taking a bonus point. None of their defeats has fallen inside the scoring range that earns one.
Their -29 difference is the third worst in the league, behind Racing 92 and Stade Francais. The Bretons are paying above all for their failure to finish off promising spells.
