Schalke 04 vs SV Elversberg: 15 home games unbeaten, and the highest-ranked promoted side 
Schalke 04 are unbeaten in 15 matches at the Veltins-Arena, with 11 wins in that run. Nothing else frames Bundesliga matchday four quite as neatly as this one, set for Sunday, 20 September at 17:30.
Both clubs came up together last summer, and their opening three games have already opened up a gap in the table. Elversberg have six points and sit seventh, while Schalke have four and are down in 11th.
The goals record tells the story better than the standings. Schalke have scored three and conceded four, while Elversberg have netted eight and shipped seven in three games.
In plain English, the Saarland upstarts score more but leave far too much space behind them. Schalke, by contrast, have built their start on the opposite idea: quiet going forward, stubborn without the ball.
The recent head-to-heads lean heavily towards the hosts. Schalke beat Elversberg 1-0 in November 2025 and won both meetings in the 2. Bundesliga last season.
So this comes down to one simple battle: Schalke’s defensive steel against the visitors’ attacking volume. That should decide it on Sunday.

Schalke 04: a defence that holds, an attack still looking for answers 
Miron Muslic started the season with a 3-0 defeat at Augsburg. That opening-day loss remains the only real setback for his side since their return to the top flight.
They answered immediately the following week, grinding out a 0-0 draw against Bayern Munich at the Veltins-Arena on 5 September. To hold the champions for 90 minutes without conceding says plenty about the defensive structure he has put in place.
On 11 September, Schalke went to Union Berlin and won 3-1, conceding their only goal deep into added time at the end of the second half. That remains their best attacking display of the campaign.
The problem is obvious: three goals in three games is nowhere near enough if you want anything more than survival. Chukwubuike Adamu, leading the line, set up a goal against Union but is still waiting for his first of the season.
Support has to come from Kenan Karaman and Adil Aouchiche, who are tasked with feeding the striker in the final third. Muslic will have to do without Emil Hojlund, who is out with an Achilles issue, and Dejan Ljubicic, who is carrying a knee problem.
The real edge here is the venue. In their last 15 home games in all competitions, Schalke have not lost once and have won 11 of them. That gives this fixture a base the table does not fully show.
Four points from three games is no comfortable cushion for a newly promoted side. Schalke need to turn their home solidity into wins if they want to avoid a season spent scrapping.

SV Elversberg: eight goals in three games and two away wins from two 
Elversberg kicked off the season by beating Bayer Leverkusen and Borussia Monchengladbach. Two wins against established clubs, collected by a side that was in the fourth tier five years ago.
The run ended on 13 September, when they lost 2-1 at home to Bayern Munich. That result changes nothing, but it did halt a momentum that was starting to make people sit up.
Vincent Wagner’s biggest selling point is still the attack: 11 goals in four matches in all competitions. No lower-table German side is producing that sort of output this early in the season.
The trade-off is brutal. Eight goals conceded over the same stretch leaves the Saarland back line among the most open in the division, and that is exactly what Schalke will try to exploit.
Away from home, the numbers are a surprise: two trips, two wins, with a combined score of 7-4. It is a sharp contrast to the end of last season, when Elversberg went five away games without a win, including three draws.
The doubt is over Francis Onyeka, the 19-year-old No 10, who has taken a knock. If he misses out, Noah Darvich would drop deeper to play behind striker David Mokwa, with Felix Keidel and Lukasz Poreba supporting from midfield in front of the centre-back pair Lukas Pinckert and Maximilian Rohr.
The split between attack and defence is this team’s defining feature. Wagner has one of the best attacking units among the promoted sides, but also a defence conceding more than two goals a game on average.

Fifteen home games unbeaten and 11 wins in that stretch: the Veltins-Arena is still one of the toughest places in lower-end German football. Elversberg arrive having conceded seven in three league games.
The head-to-head also points the same way, with Schalke winning the last three meetings, including that 1-0 success in November 2025. The 0-0 against Bayern in early September also showed that Muslic’s side can shut down an attack far more dangerous than this one.
