AFC Bournemouth vs Liverpool: no wins, no defeats after four rounds 
Bournemouth are still waiting for their first Premier League win of the season. Three draws, one defeat, three points and 15th place in the table.
Liverpool are still unbeaten. One win, three draws, six points and eighth place, which sets up two unfinished storylines colliding at the Vitality Stadium on Sunday 20 September at 3:00pm Paris time.
Both clubs have the same number of draws, but they have not come from the same sort of performance. The Cherries have led and then let it slip, while the Reds have controlled games without killing them off.
At Newcastle, Bournemouth were 2-1 up after Malick Thiaw’s own goal on 35 minutes, following Marcus Tavernier’s early opener in the ninth minute. Jacob Ramsey levelled in the 88th minute.
The same thing happened a week later at home to Brentford. Justin Kluivert and then Tavernier had put the hosts in front before a poor clearance from Djordje Petrovic allowed Kevin Schade to equalise in the 56th minute.
Two leads thrown away in two matches, one of them with two minutes left: that’s the gap between Bournemouth and the six points they should have banked. The table, of course, only shows three.
Liverpool, meanwhile, have scored six and conceded four. Alexander Isak’s brace at Ipswich, in the sixth and ninth minutes, remains the only truly comfortable display from Andoni Iraola’s side in the league.
The Reds then stumbled against Fulham at Anfield, a 0-0 draw against the side that was bottom at the time. Two points gone, and that explains their eighth-place standing despite staying unbeaten.
The schedule adds a heavy twist. Bournemouth play their first European match in the club’s history on Thursday 17 September in San Sebastian, against Real Sociedad, just three days before hosting the Reds.

Bournemouth have scored six and conceded seven in four league games. A negative goal difference that doesn’t really reflect the quality of their attacking play.
The issue is how they finish matches. The Cherries have gone ahead several times and still failed to turn those positions into three points.
At home, the record is two draws from two games. The Vitality Stadium has given them exactly one point per match and nothing more.
Marcus Tavernier has scored in the last two rounds, away at Newcastle and then against Brentford. He is currently the most reliable attacking reference in the side, alongside Justin Kluivert.
Marco Rose’s club are in the Europa League thanks to last season’s sixth-place finish in the Premier League, secured with 57 points. A first in the club’s history, after never having played in Europe before.
The league phase is a brutal one, with Real Sociedad, Sturm Graz, AC Milan, Sparta Prague, Celta Vigo, Plzen, Lillestrom and Hapoel Beer-Sheva on the list. That is going to stretch the rotation right through to December.
The injury list only makes that harder, with Julian Araujo out with a thigh problem, Amine Adli with a calf issue, Eli Junior Kroupi with ankle and foot trouble, and Veljko Milosavljevic sidelined by a knee injury.
Four absentees for a club that has to go from San Sebastian on Thursday to Liverpool on Sunday, and that leaves very little room for rotation. Their only win of the season, a 4-0 EFL Cup defeat of Lincoln City, does not offset the lack of depth.
The key issue is freshness. A side that has never played a Thursday night European tie goes into a Sunday afternoon Premier League fixture in completely uncharted territory.

Liverpool, unbeaten but stuck on one win 
Liverpool have six points after four games, with six goals scored and four conceded. Their only win came at Portman Road against Ipswich.
The Reds were held by Fulham at Anfield last time out, a 0-0 draw that cost them two points against a side that was bottom of the table at the time. Virgil van Dijk had already shut things down at the back in the opening minutes.
At home, the return has been the weakest part: two home games, two draws, and no goals in the latest one. The problem is clearly in the final third for Liverpool.
Away from home, the record is better, with one win and one draw from two trips. Andoni Iraola’s team look more dangerous when they have space to attack.
Alexander Isak produced Liverpool’s only league brace so far, at Ipswich, in the space of four minutes. His link-up with the rest of the attack has not delivered the same output since.
The European week was more convincing, with a 2-1 win over Atletico Madrid at Anfield despite Marcos Llorente giving the visitors an early lead. It showed the side can turn a bad situation around.
In terms of absences, Harvey Elliott is out after a foot fracture picked up earlier in the month. Bradley Barcola had still not returned to full training by mid-September.
Those two losses weaken Liverpool in attack, but they do not empty the cupboard. The squad depth is still miles ahead of what Bournemouth can call on today.
The biggest edge for the visitors is defensive stability: four goals conceded in four league matches, compared with Bournemouth’s seven over the same stretch.

Our prediction: Liverpool win
Bournemouth have not won any of their four league matches and come into this one after two straight leads thrown away. Four players are out, including three attacking options.
Thursday’s Europa League trip, the first in the club’s history, could hardly come at a worse time with the squad already stretched. Liverpool, by contrast, have not lost since the restart and have conceded only four goals.
The Reds have picked up more points away than at home and face a defence that has already allowed seven goals in four rounds. Malick Thiaw’s own goal and Djordje Petrovic’s error are reminders of how shaky Bournemouth can be when they try to play out.
Liverpool leave the Vitality Stadium with all three points.
