VfB Stuttgart vs Borussia Dortmund: nine from nine against three 
Borussia Dortmund have won their first three Bundesliga matches. Nine points out of nine, eight goals scored, two conceded.
Stuttgart have picked up three points over the same stretch. One win, two defeats, and 14th place in the table.
The two clubs meet on Saturday 19 September at 18:30 at the MHPArena. It is the Saturday night headline act in round four.
Only Freiburg are currently ahead of Borussia, level on points but with a better goal difference. The top of the table is already tight.
The gap in the standings is clear: six points separate the two sides after just three rounds. Stuttgart are two places above the relegation play-off spot.
The attacking numbers are closer than they first look, with six goals for Stuttgart and eight for Dortmund. It is at the back where the gap opens up.

Stuttgart, two defeats in three rounds 
Stuttgart lost 2-1 at Hoffenheim on Saturday 12 September. Adam Hlozek opened the scoring in the 13th minute before adding a second in the 67th.
Maximilian Mittelstadt had brought the two sides level in the 48th minute. Stuttgart’s equaliser lasted only 19 minutes.
It was Stuttgart’s second defeat in three rounds. They have won only once since the league resumed.
Their defensive record is the third worst among the teams in the top half, with eight goals conceded in three games. That is more than two a match.
The attack is holding up better with six goals, a total higher than Leverkusen or Mainz. The problem is clearly at the other end.
14th place leaves Stuttgart two points above 16th, the relegation play-off spot. After three rounds, the margin is already slim.
Hosting the second-placed side in that context is an instant test. The MHPArena suddenly feels like a place Stuttgart cannot afford to waste.
Even so, VfB Stuttgart have scored six goals, the same number as Hoffenheim, who sit 13th. So the problem is not only in attack.
Adam Hlozek hit a double against Stuttgart last weekend, in the 13th and 67th minutes. Conceding two goals a match has become routine for Stuttgart.
Three points from three rounds leaves them in the bottom half. They need a turnaround quickly before the gap to the top starts to look permanent.

Borussia Dortmund, three wins and two goals conceded 
Dortmund beat Paderborn 3-0 at Signal Iduna Park on Saturday 12 September. Fabio Silva struck first in the fifth minute.
Felix Nmecha then wrapped up a brace late on, in the 80th and 89th minutes. That made it three wins in a row.
The defensive record is the second best in the league: two goals conceded in three matches. Only Freiburg have done better, letting in just one.
Going forward, Dortmund have scored eight across those three rounds. That is just shy of three per game.
Their +6 goal difference is the same as Augsburg and Leipzig, but Borussia are the only one of that trio not to have dropped points.
The early schedule has been busy, with the German Super Cup on 22 August followed by the start of European competition. Rotation is becoming a factor.
So far, nothing has disturbed the run. The trip to Swabia is the first proper high-stakes away day of the season for the Yellow and Blacks.
The three opponents they have faced so far have managed just two goals between them against Borussia. Paderborn left Signal Iduna Park without even forcing a shot on target.
The East Westphalia side have still not scored in three Bundesliga rounds. The 3-0 defeat in the Ruhr remains their heaviest loss.
Nine from nine and a +6 goal difference: Dortmund arrive with the best possible start behind them. No stumble has slowed the march.
