Golf: Thomas skips the Biltmore and goes straight to the Presidents Cup

Out four days before the first tee shot

Four days. That is all the notice Justin Thomas gave before pulling out of the Biltmore Championship, confirming his withdrawal on Sunday.

The tournament runs Thursday through Sunday at The Cliffs at Walnut Cove in Asheville, North Carolina. It is new to the schedule and opens the FedEx Cup Fall, the autumn stretch where a long list of players are grinding to keep their PGA Tour cards.

Thomas is not one of them. He finished the season 43rd in the FedEx Cup standings, which keeps his status whether he tees it up in Asheville or not. Cameron Champ moves into the field in his place.

A tune-up he decided he did not need

Asheville was supposed to be the warm-up. The Presidents Cup comes the following week, and Thomas will be on that team.

Brandt Snedeker made him one of six captain’s picks for the United States. Thomas is 33, has 16 PGA Tour wins, and is heading to a fourth Presidents Cup after four Ryder Cups.

Dropping a competitive week four days out from a team event is not nothing. No reason has been given.

The FedEx Cup Fall opens without one of its biggest names. Whether Thomas turns up at the Presidents Cup rusty or fresh is the kind of question that only gets answered on the first tee.
