Chicago settle the question early
The Chicago Bears and D’Andre Swift agreed a three-year extension worth $33.75 million on Friday, according to multiple reports. The deal carries $27.5 million in guaranteed money and runs through the 2029 season.
Swift was due to reach free agency once the 2026 campaign ended. Settling it now, in the opening week of that campaign rather than in March, tells you how Chicago rate the position and the player holding it.
He is 27 and entering his third season with the franchise.

The numbers behind the guarantee
Swift ran for a career-high 1,087 yards and nine touchdowns last season across 16 games, and caught 34 passes for 299 yards and another score. The year before that, in 17 games, he had 959 rushing yards and six touchdowns. Two seasons in Chicago, two different gears, with the second one comfortably the better.
His career line reads 4,775 rushing yards and 38 rushing touchdowns from 89 regular-season games, 64 of them as a starter, plus 271 receptions for 2,097 yards and nine more scores. The receiving half of that ledger matters as much as the rushing half in how Chicago use him.
From Detroit to Philadelphia to a long-term deal
Detroit took Swift in the second round of the 2020 draft, 35th overall, and kept him three seasons. Philadelphia had him for one, in 2023, and that year produced his Pro Bowl selection on the back of 1,049 rushing yards and five touchdowns.
He has now been paid by a third organisation on the strength of what he did for the first two. Running backs reaching 28 have spent the past decade watching the market shrink under them, which is the context that makes $27.5 million guaranteed worth stopping on.
