Two swings in the second, and the derby was gone
The Yankees took care of the Mets 6-4 in the Bronx last night. A New York derby settled early, in the second inning, by two men.
Cody Bellinger lashed a ball to right for a three-run homer. Ben Rice and Anthony Volpe scored on the play. It was the former NL MVP’s 14th home run of the season, and three RBIs on the night to go with it.
Ben Rice followed with a solo blast to left. His 37th of the year. The Yankees designated hitter finished with three hits and three runs scored, good for a .259/.354/.523 line.

A 3.24 ERA, and none of it showed up
Nolan McLean had a rough night. The Mets starter gave up 10 hits and five earned runs in five innings, including the two homers that swung the game.
It is a brutal line for a pitcher who still owns a 3.24 ERA on the season. Five strikeouts, one walk: the stuff was there, but the location was miles off.
The Mets did chip away later on. Four runs in all, but never enough to erase the early damage.
23 games over .500 with October closing in
The Yankees are now 85-62. They have won 17 of their last 24. They are at their best mark of the season, 23 games above .500.
That timing matters. With the regular season winding down, the Bronx club are charging into the stretch run, and every series starts to feel bigger.
