The ceremony waits for the man it is for
Tennessee were due to put Chris Johnson into their Ring of Honor on Sunday, at the season opener against the New York Jets. That will not happen this weekend. The Titans said earlier today that Johnson and his family are no longer able to travel to Nashville, and that the official induction will be moved to a later date so it can take place with them in the building.
A halftime ceremony marking his career will still go ahead at Nissan Stadium. Johnson, who turns 41 this month, revealed in June that he has ALS.

Six seasons that still hold a record
Johnson played 95 games for Tennessee between 2008 and 2013, running for 7,965 yards and scoring 58 touchdowns. The 2009 season is the one people reach for first. He ran for 2,006 yards, was named NFL Offensive Player of the Year and made first-team All-Pro.
He also gained 2,509 yards from scrimmage that year, which remains the NFL single-season record. The league has since gone to a 17-game schedule and nobody has caught him.
There is a small symmetry in the fixture. Sunday’s opponents are the Jets, the team Johnson joined for the 2014 season after leaving Tennessee.
Twentieth name on the wall
Johnson is set to become the 20th member of the Ring of Honor. The late Dave McGinnis, a former Titans assistant coach and radio analyst, is due to be added later in the campaign.
The club has given no new date. What they have said is that the wait is the point, and that they would rather hold the ceremony when Johnson and his family can be there for it.
