Kilmarnock vs Aberdeen: two attacks have gone missing for three straight games
A week after settling for a proper old 0-0 at Pittodrie, Killie and Aberdeen do it all again on Saturday at 18:45 at Rugby Park. This time, a place in the Scottish League Cup semi-finals is on the line.

A glimmer of hope: Last week’s slog at least got Kilmarnock off the mark and earned them their first Premiership point of the season.

No hiding place: League safety maths goes out the window here. In the cup, one of these two attacks has to find a way through.
The cup run tells a very different story from the league campaign. Kilmarnock knocked out Ayr United 3-2 in the previous round, while Aberdeen beat Dundee 3-0.
The contrast between the two competitions is stark for both clubs. Each side has looked far better in the League Cup than in the Scottish top flight.
Stephen Robinson knows what this trophy means better than most. The Northern Irish boss guided St Mirren to the title last season before moving on to the Dons.
At the other end, Neil McCann is working with a squad that sealed survival with four straight wins at the end of the 2025-26 season. That momentum has not followed them into this campaign.
Aberdeen’s last visit to Rugby Park ended in a 3-0 hammering for the hosts in January 2026. That result gives Killie plenty of reason to believe.
With both teams lacking any real bite in the final third, the total goals line matters far more than who actually wins.
The draw has handed both clubs a winnable quarter-final, with neither of Glasgow’s big two in sight. A semi-final spot is bound to shape the thinking of both managers.
Rugby Park, Kilmarnock’s home, often plays host to tight games between these two. The 0-0 at Pittodrie last week pretty much said it all.
Kilmarnock: a cup run that looks nothing like their league form 
Kilmarnock ended the 2025-26 season with four wins on the bounce to stay up. That form even carried into pre-season.
The League Cup group stage backed it up. Two wins and a draw, won on penalties, from their first three matches.
Qualification, though, was only just secured. After a draw and a penalty shootout defeat to finish, Killie topped Group H by a single point over Hamilton Academical.
Then the league campaign turned ugly. Four defeats and a draw from five matches, with some heavy losses along the way: 4-3 at St Johnstone, 1-5 against Celtic and 0-4 at Dundee United.
Kilmarnock’s only win in that spell came in the cup, against Ayr United. The 0-0 snatched at Aberdeen last week at least got them moving in the table.
Robbie Deas is the only notable absentee, with the rest of the squad available to Neil McCann. A near-empty treatment room is a rare luxury for Killie this season.
Joe Hugill is the club’s top scorer in the competition with two goals. The striker should line up alongside Djenairo Daniels as they try to end the drought in front of goal.
The League Cup remains Killie’s happy hunting ground this season, with four wins and a draw from five matches. The gap to their league form is hard to explain any other way than the pressure of fighting for survival.

Aberdeen: a flying start, then the crash 
Aberdeen won their first five games of the season in all competitions. What’s happening now is the complete opposite.
The Dons are now three games without a win and have taken just one victory from their last five outings. That lone success came in the cup, a 3-0 win over Dundee.
The league has been much tougher going: a 2-0 defeat at Dundee, a 1-0 home loss to Rangers, a 3-0 thumping at Celtic and then the 0-0 draw with Kilmarnock.
Stephen Robinson’s side have not scored since their trip to Dundee. Three games without a goal for a team that had put three past Dundee in the cup.
Brad Lyons, Emmanuel Gyamfi, Kusini Yengi and Kristers Tobers are all out for this trip. Four absences that leave Robinson short on options.
Kevin Nisbet remains Aberdeen’s main weapon in this competition. The striker has a stunning eight goals in five games.
That split between his cup output and the team’s league numbers sums Aberdeen up. The League Cup is still where they look sharpest going forward.
The Dons have five wins from five in this competition. No other stat tells the story of their split personality better this season.

Both sides come into this on the back of three games without scoring, including the 0-0 they played out seven days ago. Two attacks that have been stuck in neutral for three weeks are not suddenly going to burst into life in a knockout tie.
Kilmarnock have managed just one league goal in five matches, cup games aside. Aberdeen have not found the net since their trip to Dundee.
The only real counterpoint is Kevin Nisbet, who has scored eight times in five cup matches. One in-form striker can turn a game, but not often enough to turn this sort of contest into a goal fest.
Under 2.5 goals looks the play. A quarter-final between two sides low on confidence in the final third, with extra time a real possibility, points firmly towards a cagey night.
