Tottenham Hotspur vs Everton: 18th meets 8th, and the gap is already there 
Tottenham sit 18th in the Premier League with just one point after three games. Everton have five and are up in eighth.
Four points apart after only three matches. That is already a pretty clear split between two clubs who both expected to be pushing the top half.
Gameweek four brings them together at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Saturday 12 September at 17:30 UK time, or 18:30 in France.
Tottenham’s problem has been obvious since the restart: they still had not scored after two matches, while shipping five at the other end.
The point picked up at the City Ground against Nottingham Forest in gameweek three ended the losing run, but it did not exactly calm the noise around Roberto De Zerbi’s project.
Everton arrive in the opposite mood. They had conceded just once in their first two games, the best defensive record in the middle pack of the table.
The Toffees then nicked a 2-2 draw against Manchester United with a 96th-minute strike from Ainsley Maitland-Niles. Benjamin Sesko had put the Red Devils ahead with an 88th-minute header.
At the top, Manchester City and Arsenal are already setting the pace on nine points apiece, with a matching goal difference of +5. Hull City are next on seven and have not conceded yet.
At the bottom, Fulham and Coventry City are the only teams still stuck on zero after three games. Tottenham and Aston Villa are just above them.
The recent head-to-head record still heavily favours the London side, with 15 wins to Everton’s six, plus 12 draws. But right now, the current form tells a very different story.

One point from three games: Tottenham are level with Aston Villa for the league’s worst tally. Only Fulham and Coventry City have done worse, with zero.
The biggest worry is up front. After two games, Spurs still had not scored once, while conceding five.
The trip to Nottingham Forest brought their first point of the season. On paper it was a decent chance too, with Forest also stuck on one point at the time.
Roberto De Zerbi hit back at the criticism after that draw. “We’re not on Football Manager,” the Italian said, before pointing out that the club had signed some very good players but had not built a team made up of names alone.
It was a blunt summary of a reshaped squad that has not yet found its balance. That adaptation time is already costing them in the table.
Even so, the numbers leave Spurs only two points behind Sunderland, Ipswich Town and Crystal Palace. That gap is still recoverable, especially this early.
But the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium is already shaping up as a pressure point in gameweek four. Another poor home result would drag the club deeper into the relegation fight.
The margin is slim, but it is there: just four points separate Spurs from the eighth place occupied by their visitors. The season is still in its opening moves.
There is no kind run of fixtures coming next either. Three points against a direct rival feel like the bare minimum if they want to kick-start the season.

Everton are building on a solid base 
Five points from three games and eighth place: Everton have made a strong start. They are above teams such as Leeds, Brighton and Manchester United in the table.
The foundation has been defensive. One goal conceded in their first two games is the best mark in the middle of the league.
After two matches, they also had the best direct-attack total in the Premier League with six, level with Manchester United. It points to a side that can get forward quickly when the chance is there.
The 2-2 draw with Manchester United backed that up. Trailing 2-1 from the 88th minute after Benjamin Sesko headed in from a Luke Shaw cross, the Toffees found a leveller in the 96th.
Ainsley Maitland-Niles picked out the top corner from around 30 metres with the final touch of the game. United were left on four points after three rounds.
Everton now head to London with confidence intact. They still haven’t lost in this opening stretch.
They also have an EFL Cup tie against Wolverhampton later this week, so squad management is already part of the conversation. The English calendar offers no mercy, especially in September.
A win at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium would lift the Toffees to eight points, which is the level of the current podium. There is still plenty of room for them to climb.
Against a home attack that took two matches to finally score, Everton’s defensive shape looks like their strongest card. That is where this game will be decided.
