SC Paderborn vs Freiburg: unbeaten newcomers against the hottest attack in the league right now 
Freiburg have scored at least three goals in every game they have played since the start of the season. Paderborn, meanwhile, did not manage a single shot on target on the opening weekend of the Bundesliga.
The contrast is stark heading into this second-round clash, set for Saturday at 15:30 local time at the Home Deluxe Arena. It is the newly promoted side’s first home game in Germany’s top flight.
Paderborn earned promotion through the play-offs, edging Wolfsburg 2-1 on aggregate back in May. That means they go into the 2026-27 campaign with the tag of relegation candidates.
Their point in Mainz, a 0-0 draw, looks decent enough on paper. But it barely hides the attacking problem already staring them in the face: no goals after one match.
At the other end, Fribourg arrive with four straight wins in all competitions. The 4-1 demolition of Werder Bremen on 30 August put Julian Schuster’s side near the top of the table, with four goals scored and just one conceded.
The Baden club also booked their place in the Conference League group stage by getting past Motherwell over two legs. The form is there, and the numbers back it up.
There is one wrinkle, though: Paderborn have not lost in nine matches, a run that began on 3 May. It is that clash between defensive discipline and blunt attacking play that should decide the afternoon.

The promoted side’s numbers are neat and very short: one game played, one draw, no goals scored, none conceded.
That 0-0 at Mainz showed the discipline of a deep block well drilled by Ralf Kettemann. It also showed just how little they offered going forward.
No shots on target in 90 minutes. That is the headline from Paderborn’s first game back in the top division. Against a team scoring three goals a match, that becomes more than a blip. It is a real problem.
Still, the nine-match unbeaten run that started on 3 May gives them something to cling to. It covers the end of last season in the second division, the play-off win over Wolfsburg and the 4-2 victory over Phonix Lubeck in the German Cup.
The injury list does not help. Felix Götze, out with concussion, and Nyamekye Awortwie-Grant, who has a knee problem, are both missing from the back line. In midfield, Timur Gayret is out with an ACL injury, while Sven Michel and Sebastian Klaas are also unavailable.
Kettemann is therefore likely to stick with a back three of Ter Horst, Hansen and Scheller, with Curda and Obermair as wing-backs. Marvin Pieringer should lead the line alone, backed by Marino and Vidovic.
The only encouraging previous meeting goes back to November 2023, when Paderborn beat this same Freiburg side 3-1 in the German Cup. That feels like ancient history in league terms.

Freiburg began their Bundesliga season with a no-nonsense 4-1 win over Werder Bremen on 30 August.
Julian Schuster’s men were four goals up before the hour mark, with the only reply coming late on. The table has them in the top three, with four scored and one conceded.
That result is part of a four-game winning run in all competitions. Their 5-1 win over Fortuna Dusseldorf in the German Cup a week earlier pointed in the same direction.
Between those two games, the club also saw off Motherwell twice to reach the Conference League group stage. The European schedule has not slowed them down one bit.
At least three goals in every match since the season began: that is the stat that matters most against a team set up to sit deep and survive.
As for the squad, Patrick Osterhage is carrying a muscle issue and Rihito Yamamoto is still working his way back, while Florent Muslija is recovering from an ACL injury.
Schuster is expected to line up Engelhardt and Eggestein as the double pivot, with Beste, Suzuki and Scherhant behind Matanovic. That should give Fribourg plenty of angles in the final third.
