Forty million euros walked away, and the defender knows it
Loic Desire had a choice on Friday. He could have brushed the question aside. He did not. Asked by Ouest-France about Abdelhamid Ait Boudlal, the Rennes sporting director went with something closer to a diagnosis than a defence: “since Tuesday, he has had to be 100 percent focused on Stade Rennais, maybe before that he was only at 80 percent.”
Twenty percent. That is the gap Desire is putting on the record, and it lines up neatly with a summer the 20-year-old spent listening to offers instead of watching video.
Desire did soften it, slightly. “He has to cut out the mistakes, that is obvious. But for me, this is first and foremost a concentration issue.”

Fulham came with real money and got nothing
Rennes turned down close to 40 million euros. Fulham wanted the centre-back, made a serious bid, and the Bretons barely blinked before saying no. Ait Boudlal is one of the few players the academy has turned into a genuine first-team piece in recent seasons, and the club treated him that way.
Twenty Ligue 1 appearances. Two goals, one assist. At 20 years old, being priced like an established Premier League starter on that record is rare for a defender coming out of France.
Saying no to that money buys the club a player. It also buys the player a debt. Rennes have European nights stacked into their autumn, and nobody at the Roazhon Park is going to wait patiently while he works out his form.
His head coach got there first
Franck Haise did not leave the talking to the front office. Rennes beat Le Mans 3-2 on Sunday, a result that came with one goal conceded directly through Ait Boudlal, and Haise walked into the press conference with a warning already loaded: “either he learns quickly, or we change him because there is competition in every position.”
Desire took the gentler line. He recalled that Jacquet heard the same complaints at the same stage of his career, and pointed out that a transfer window is a brutal thing to sit through when you are 20 and being courted by an English club.
So one voice threatens the shirt and the other offers an excuse. Ait Boudlal gets to pick which one he listens to, and Rennes will find out on Saturday.
