Werder Bremen vs RB Leipzig: ten straight without defeat for the Saxons 
RB Leipzig are unbeaten in their last 10 meetings with Werder Bremen, with six wins and four draws. That run says plenty ahead of this trip to the Weserstadion.
Kick-off is set for Saturday, September 5 at 3:30 p.m. for this second round Bundesliga fixture. The two clubs have opened the season with wildly different ambitions.
Werder Bremen started with a 4-1 hammering at Freiburg, a defeat that leaves them 15th with a goal difference of minus three. Leipzig, by contrast, swept Borussia Monchengladbach aside 3-0 without conceding, which puts them straight into the top three.
Last season already drew the same picture, with Leipzig finishing third and booking a Champions League place. Werder, meanwhile, ended up 15th, just three points clear of the relegation playoff spot.
The odds make the gap look pretty brutal, with 1.79 on a Leipzig win against 4.10 for the Bremen side. Few bookmakers are expecting a shock.
That said, Bremen are at home, in a stadium where they often find enough to keep the damage down. The question is whether they can hold out for more than an hour, which was not the case in Freiburg.
Daniel Thioune also has to deal with a treatment room that is unusually full this early in the season. Several summer signings still have not been used.
So this one is shaped by a clear imbalance, but there is one big unknown: can Bremen stay in the contest beyond half-time?
Werder Bremen: four goals conceded before the hour mark 
Opening day was a nightmare for Werder, who were 4-0 down at Freiburg before the hour mark. A late consolation changed nothing about the bigger picture.
The restart had looked decent enough, though, with a 3-0 win at Hansa Lueneburg in the first round of the German Cup. But the gulf in class makes that reference only so useful.
The club finished last season in 15th, with just three points to spare over the playoff place. There is very little room for manoeuvre.
After one round, they sit 15th again, with a goal difference of minus three. Straight away, that brings the problems of last season back into focus.
Daniel Thioune is without new arrivals Stalmach, Dinkci and Wojcik, all out since the start of the campaign. Midfielder Weiser is also missing.
Agu, an important part of the system, and substitute striker Topp are unavailable too. Rotation is basically non-existent.
Jens Stage, who scored 10 goals and added two assists last season, had already pulled out at Freiburg and remains a doubt for Saturday. His absence cuts Bremen off from their main link between the lines.
Neil El Aynaoui, on loan from Roma, could feature in the squad for the first time. A small bright spot in a messy situation.

RB Leipzig: a controlled start 
Leipzig made a calm start to the campaign, easing past Borussia Monchengladbach 3-0 in front of their own fans. The clean sheet mattered just as much as the three goals.
A week earlier, the Red Bulls had brushed aside Trier 6-0 in the first round of the German Cup. Nine goals scored, none conceded, across two competitive games.
This start carries on from a 2025-2026 season that ended in third place in the Bundesliga. The club will be in the Champions League in the weeks ahead.
RB Leipzig are third once again at the moment, with a goal difference of plus three. It is the kind of start that keeps them glued to the front-runners.
The squad is not fully fit, though, with goalkeeper Nyland and midfielder Ouedraogo still unavailable. Brazilian forward Romulo has also been out since the restart.
The biggest loss is Baumgartner, who scored 13 goals and set up eight more last season. The Austrian was a major reason behind Leipzig’s strong run.
Even so, his absence did not stop Leipzig from cruising against Gladbach, which tells you plenty about the depth in this squad. Gruda, Bakayoko and Nusa give them pace and width.
Against a Bremen defence that shipped four goals in one half at Freiburg, that attacking depth looks decisive. Leipzig arrive with confidence and the historical edge firmly on their side.

Bremen’s injury list, which rules Thioune out of Stalmach, Dinkci, Wojcik, Weiser, Agu and Topp, only shrinks the home side’s chances further. The call is Leipzig to win at the Weserstadion.
