Down two sets, and he still won it
Benjamin Bonzi is into the third round at Flushing Meadows. He beat Marcos Giron 2-6, 4-6, 7-5, 6-3, 6-4, finishing just before 11pm French time.
The first hour was ugly. Bonzi barely touched Giron’s serve and lost both opening sets. The turn came at 5-5 in the third, when he finally got the break he had been chasing all night. After that the American never won another set.

Medvedev, then Giron, both the hard way
Bonzi opened his tournament by putting Daniil Medvedev out. Two rounds, two long matches, two opponents nobody expected him to beat. That is a lot of tennis before the first week is done.
Giron will not enjoy the replay. The American hits flat and moves the ball quickly, which works on this surface, and he was two sets up with a chance to serve out the third. He let it go and never got it back.
Three French players left in the men’s draw
Ugo Blanchet came through against Jakub Mensik after four and a half hours. Adrian Mannarino needed four sets to see off Jordan Thompson. With Bonzi that is three still standing after two rounds.
Thursday brings the third round in New York.
