One game in the second set

Taylor Townsend is through to the third round of the US Open. She beat Jelena Ostapenko 7-5, 6-1, closing it out around 00h30 French time.

The first set was a real fight. Ostapenko stayed with her to 5-5 and then lost the thread completely. Townsend won the next two games, then eight of the last nine.

Twelve months after the row at the net

These two met in New York last summer and it did not end quietly. There was an exchange at the net, then Ostapenko went after Townsend’s conduct publicly, and the story ran for days at the tournament.

Nothing like that this time. Just a scoreline with no argument in it. Townsend plays on, Ostapenko flies home.

Serve and volley still works here

Townsend built her reputation in doubles, where she reached world No 1. She comes forward, which almost nobody on the women’s tour does any more, and New York’s hard courts reward it.

Ann Li and Emma Navarro also came through overnight. The American contingent in the bottom half is holding up well while the seeds around them keep disappearing.
