Fiorentina vs Torino: two slow starts, one desperate need to respond at the Franchi 
Matchday 3 in Serie A throws up a Saturday 5 September 15:00 showdown between two teams still stuck on zero points. Fiorentina host Torino at the Stadio Artemio Franchi, with both clubs already feeling a bit too much heat for comfort.
La Viola have shipped seven goals in their first two outings, against Roma and then newly promoted Frosinone. That is a heavy toll for a club hoping to close the book on a miserable campaign.
Torino have made no better start in the table, losing their opening two league matches. They also crashed out of the Coppa Italia this week, beaten at home by Monza.
Both clubs changed coach in the summer and are still trying to find some kind of rhythm. Fabio Grosso is now in charge in Florence, with Ignazio Abate on the Torino bench.
The starting points were modest enough. Fiorentina finished 15th in the last Serie A season, while Torino ended up 12th.
So this has the feel of an early-season pressure test, the sort of match that can drag the loser towards the wrong end of the table. And games with that sort of edge rarely turn into classics.
The head-to-head record at the Stadio Artemio Franchi gives the hosts a clear edge. Fiorentina have 41 wins from 82 home meetings with Torino, compared with 11 victories for the visitors.
The market has reached the same conclusion, despite the recent form. La Viola are priced around 1.90, with Torino out at 4.70.

Last season was a slog for the Tuscan club, who spent long stretches hovering close to the drop zone. Fiorentina eventually finished 15th, eight points clear of the bottom three.
To open a new chapter, the club turned to Fabio Grosso, who arrived from Sassuolo this summer. A new coach was meant to bring a proper reset to the squad.
And the rebuild has certainly been substantial. The exits of Kean to Como and Mandragora, Comuzzo and Fortini to Torino show just how much work was needed.
The club tried to make up for it by signing across the pitch, including Dragusin in defence and Inao Oulai and Atta in midfield. Up front, Mastantuono, Pellegrino and Beto were all brought in during the same summer window.
So far, that transition has been expensive on the pitch. Fiorentina were ripped apart at Roma, losing 4-0.
Then came a second blow, a 0-3 home defeat to promoted Frosinone. Getting beaten like that in front of your own fans straight after the restart sends a worrying message.
Seven goals conceded and none scored in two matches is hard to dress up. At the moment, the team have shown neither defensive control nor any real punch going forward.
As for the squad, Grosso will be without full-back Parisi and winger Sottil, both ruled out. New arrivals Inao Oulai and Atta are expected in midfield, with Mastantuono and Pellegrino strong candidates to start.

Torino keep finding fresh trouble 
Torino are used to life in mid-table, and they finished 12th last season. The aim this year is to push into the top half.
Ignazio Abate was brought in to lead that push, with a transfer window aimed at steadying the squad. Simeone, signed permanently from Napoli after scoring 11 Serie A goals, was one of the headline arrivals.
They also raided today’s opponents, bringing in Comuzzo, Fortini and Mandragora. Perri arrived from Leeds to strengthen the goalkeeping department.
But the first two league games brought nothing back in terms of points, despite fairly decent performances. Torino lost 2-1 at home to AC Milan before falling by the same score at Sassuolo.
The week got worse with a Coppa Italia exit. Torino were knocked out at home, losing 1-0 to Monza.
Three straight defeats in all competitions will do a number on any squad still under construction. That run is already putting Abate under a bit of pressure.
The injury list is not helping either for this trip. Goalkeeper Israel, midfielder Casadei and striker Pellegri are all unavailable.
Up front, the Simeone-Adams pairing, with Adams having scored once in Serie A this season, should keep its place. Croatian playmaker Vlasic looks the most likely to feed them.

Our prediction: Fiorentina to win
Both sides come in on zero points, but they are not arriving in the same mood. Fiorentina are back at home after being humiliated in front of their own fans, and that creates an immediate need to put it right.
The record at the Franchi backs that up strongly. Forty-one Fiorentina wins from 82 home meetings with Torino, against 11 away successes, tells a fairly clear story.
Torino’s current form is also worse of the two. Three straight defeats in all competitions, including that Coppa Italia loss at home to Monza, have left confidence looking fragile.
The Torino injury list only adds to the problem. Losing Israel, Casadei and Pellegri at the same time leaves Abate short of options in all three areas of the pitch.
Fiorentina are still vulnerable after conceding seven goals in two games, and nobody is expecting a stroll here. But the home win, priced around 1.90, looks the likeliest outcome in a clash between two teams already under the pump.
