An 18 million sale in the dead of night
Olympique de Marseille have confirmed the transfer of Quinten Timber to Crystal Palace. The announcement came just before 2am. The Eagles have paid around 18 million euros to land the Dutch midfielder.
Timber arrived on the Canebiere last winter from Feyenoord for just 4.5 million euros. The 25-year-old international settled quickly in Marseille’s midfield. Six months later, the club has quadrupled its money.
On the books, it’s a smart move. On the pitch, it leaves a hole.

A one-way summer
Marseille’s summer business has been almost entirely about exits. Ethan Nwaneri, Arthur Vermeeren and Benjamin Pavard were not kept on after underwhelming loans. They have returned to Arsenal, RB Leipzig and Inter Milan respectively.
Seven more players have left over the course of the summer. Mason Greenwood joined Fenerbahce, Facundo Medina moved to Bayer Leverkusen, Geronimo Rulli went to Manchester City, Hamed Junior Traore signed for Genoa, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang headed to Deportivo La Coruna, Leonardo Balerdi joined AS Roma and Bilal Nadir moved to Hamburg.
Total from those seven sales: around 70 million euros. Add Timber and the figure climbs past 85 million.
What it means going forward
The club has cleaned up its balance sheet. It has also stripped out a big chunk of its experienced squad without replacing it position for position. The midfield has lost its most reliable performer since January, and the French window is now shut for incoming deals.
In simple terms, Marseille head into the next stretch of the season with a smaller, younger group. For bettors, that matters straight away. A side that loses a starting midfielder in September usually needs several matches to get its shape back, especially when the stakes rise.
Crystal Palace, meanwhile, spent the night shopping in France. Timber was not the only one on the move.
