Premier League: Chelsea shut down Liverpool’s late move for Malo Gusto

Liverpool came knocking at Chelsea’s door

Liverpool took one last swing on Tuesday. According to RMC Sport, the Reds checked with Chelsea about Malo Gusto. The answer came back quickly: no.

The Merseyside club put forward a loan with an option to buy for the 23-year-old France right-back. Chelsea did not budge. The Blues want a permanent sale or nothing. The whole thing shut down almost as fast as it opened, hours before the English window slammed shut.

Chelsea are not handing out bargains

The London club’s stance is easy to follow. Gusto arrived from Olympique Lyonnais in January 2023 and has settled into the defensive rotation. He is a France international and still only 23. A loan with no obligation to buy would have done little beyond trimming the wage bill.

He had already been tracked this summer. Foot Mercato reported on Monday that Gusto turned down an approach from Atletico Madrid. Same outcome with Liverpool, except this time the rejection came from the club rather than the player.

Chelsea were hardly idle either. The same outlet says the Blues have agreed a deal with Manchester City for Enzo Fernandez, valued at 146 million euros. That reshapes the picture on the money side.

A nervy deadline day in England

The refusal landed in the middle of a wildly busy deadline day in England. Liverpool had already wrapped up the arrival of Bradley Barcola from Paris Saint-Germain, then watched Ibrahim Mbaye slip away to Aston Villa after failing to agree terms with the Paris club.

For Gusto, nothing changes for now. He stays at Stamford Bridge, at a club that has just sold big and had no reason to release a starter in the final hours.
