Sassuolo vs Frosinone: an all-Serie A showdown for a place in the last 16 
Sassuolo host Frosinone on Wednesday September 2 at the Mapei Stadium, with kick-off set for 3:00 pm Italian time. Both clubs are in Serie A, which gives this Italian Cup tie a bit more bite than most early-round fixtures.
The winner will book a spot in the last 16. Both sides came through the previous round without breaking sweat, and that should have them feeling decent heading into this one.
Sassuolo brushed aside Cesena 3-0. Frosinone did even better, beating Juve Stabia 4-1 with Giorgi Kvernadze in devastating form.
The league form is just as even. One defeat and one win for each side, which leaves this one wide open on paper.
Alberto Aquilani took charge of Sassuolo this summer after Fabio Grosso was moved on. His first Serie A win arrived last weekend against Torino.
Massimiliano Alvini, meanwhile, has carried on the work he started in summer 2025. Appointed by Frosinone after relegation, he brought the Canarini straight back to Serie A in his first season.
The stakes go beyond just staying alive in the competition. Frosinone have reached the last 16 only once in recent memory, during a 2023-2024 run that ended in the quarter-finals after a 4-0 hammering by Juventus.
There is no room for second chances in this round. One match, no return leg, winner takes all.
Sassuolo: Volpato and Berardi have kicked the Neroverdi into gear 
Aquilani’s reign began with a welcome boost in the cup. The 3-0 win at Cesena set the tone, with Cristian Volpato striking first.
The Serie A opener was tougher, ending in a 2-1 defeat away to Atalanta. That result extended a run of three straight losses carried over from the end of last season under Grosso.
Last weekend finally stopped the slide. Volpato and Domenico Berardi delivered a 2-1 win over Torino, Sassuolo’s first league victory under their new manager.
Now the aim is to make it two straight competitive wins, something they have not done yet this season. A home cup tie is the obvious chance to do it.
The squad is still missing a few pieces. Yeferson Paz, Edoardo Pieragnolo, Daniel Boloca and Fali Cande are long-term absentees, while Ismael Kone and Sebastian Walukiewicz are both sidelined with ankle and muscle problems respectively.
Armand Lauriente is still without a goal or assist this season. The Frenchman should keep his place on the left, where his influence is not always captured by the numbers.
Last season’s finish is still hanging over the dressing room. Three defeats on the spin to close the campaign under Grosso, then an opening loss in Bergamo, left Sassuolo without a league win in four before beating Torino.
The 3-0 against Cesena in the previous round, though, showed a different side. Volpato opened the scoring and Sassuolo controlled the night from start to finish at the Mapei.

Frosinone: Kvernadze and Raimondo are carrying the promoted side 
Their Serie A return began with a respectable defeat. Beaten 1-0 at home by Juventus, the Canarini kept the damage down against a wasteful Turin side.
The answer came the following week, and it was a statement. Frosinone went to Florence and won 3-0 away to Fiorentina.
Antonio Raimondo scored twice that day, with Gabriele Bracaglia adding the other in the 38th minute. It was the promoted side’s first league win of the season.
Kvernadze remains Alvini’s biggest difference-maker. After bagging two goals and an assist against Juve Stabia, he added another direct contribution in Florence.
Bracaglia also has a strong case to start at the Mapei. Coming off the bench for Kevin Akpoguma in the previous round, he scored and set up a goal in around 20 minutes.
The injury list is clearly kinder to the visitors. Only Fares Ghedjemis is out, nursing a calf problem, which leaves Alvini with virtually all his options available.
Alvini’s record since arriving deserves credit. Hired in summer 2025, he brought the club back to the top flight at the first attempt after two years away.
The Italian Cup, though, has never really been kind to the Canarini. Outside that 2023-2024 run, they have usually fallen at one of the early hurdles.

Our pick: Sassuolo win
The Mapei Stadium has been kind to the Neroverdi since the restart, with a 3-0 win over Cesena and a 2-1 victory against Torino. Their only two defeats this season have come on the road.
The Volpato-Berardi spark changes the look of Aquilani’s attack. Frosinone are coming off a big result in Florence, but their only Serie A away trip so far is a tiny sample to build lasting belief on.
Sassuolo’s absentees are mostly squad players, not core starters. That makes the home win the play, at a price that still looks fair in a meeting between two clubs from the same division.
Expected rotation on both sides adds some uncertainty, of course. But the Mapei remains a far better setting for the Neroverdi than a trip away, and that should be enough to tilt it their way.
