A retirement announced on a Monday afternoon, on Instagram
No press conference. No federation statement first. Frank Zambo Anguissa ended his Cameroon career with a post on his own channels, written for the supporters rather than the officials.
“Playing for Cameroon’s national team is every Cameroonian kid’s dream. I am very happy and, above all, very grateful to have been able to live it,” the Napoli midfielder wrote, before describing the Lions Indomptables shirt as an immense honour and an immense pride.
He picked deadline week to say it, when the football world is watching transfer feeds. That is very much in character.

Ten years in the engine room
Anguissa held Cameroon’s midfield together for the best part of a decade. Marseille, then Fulham, then Napoli from 2021, where the club career finally caught up with the international one.
His message thanked the federation, the coaches, his team-mates and everyone who backed him across those years, and it made a point of reaching the fans directly: “thank you for your passion, your love and your support, in the wins and in the tougher moments.”
Then the line that will get quoted: “A Lion Indomptable once, a Lion Indomptable always.”
Who covers all that ground now?
Cameroon lose their balance here. Anguissa ate up territory almost nobody else in the squad can cover and still gave the side a way out under pressure. Box-to-box midfielders who last ninety minutes at that intensity do not come along on request.
The staff will end up redistributing his job across two or three players rather than finding a replacement. That is a rebuild in the middle of the pitch at a moment when the national team badly wanted calm.
Napoli, meanwhile, get a 30-year-old with a lighter calendar. Serie A may end up the winner in all this.
