In other words, the Coppa Italia has been the only source of comfort for either squad so far. That alone gives this tie a bit of edge.

Parma have lost their opening two Serie A matches without scoring a goal. Their opening-day home defeat to Cagliari was followed by a setback on Saturday in Turin against Juventus.
Across those two games, they managed just five shots on target. That tells the story of their attacking problem.
The summer 2026 exit of Mateo Pellegrino to Fiorentina left a hole nobody has filled. Parma were already struggling for goals last season.
Their only bright spot has come in the cup: a 2-0 first-round win over Catania, with a brace from young striker Simone Lontani. It remains the club’s only victory this season.
Parma have won this competition three times around the turn of the 1990s and 2000s. The history is there, but it means very little against a side with nothing to lose.
Carlos Cuesta is likely to shuffle the pack ahead of the league visit of Monza. Young defender Dominik Drobnic, who impressed on his debut in Turin, could keep his place.
Up front, the competition is open between Lontani, El Bilal Toure, Matija Frigan, Nesta Elphege and new signing David Romero, who caught the eye off the bench against Juventus. In midfield, Hans Nicolussi Caviglia is out with a groin injury.

Cremonese under pressure after a drop and two defeats 
Cremonese dropped back into Serie B at the end of the 2025-2026 season after just one year in the top division. They finished with only three wins from their final 22 league matches.
The new campaign has not improved anything: a 1-0 defeat at Empoli, then a 3-0 home loss to Modena. Two games, zero points, zero goals.
One shot on target in 180 minutes of league football. Brutal stuff. The Giovanni Zini crowd is no longer hiding its frustration.
Marco Giampaolo is already looking shaky in the dugout, with several names being linked as possible replacements. So this trip to Emilia looks a lot like a must-not-lose for the coach.
The Coppa Italia first round remains the only good memory for Cremonese this season, with that 2-0 win over a badly slipping Sampdoria. It is not much to build on.
The available squad also raises questions. Tommaso Barbieri, Federico Baschirotto and Danish striker David Stuckler are doubts, Morten Thorsby is waiting on a move, and Michele Collocolo is still carrying a muscle issue.
Manuel De Luca and Federico Bonazzoli led the line against Modena and got nowhere. Giampaolo is expected to change things up in attack in a bid to finally get them moving against Parma.
