Braga vs Vitoria de Guimaraes: a Minho derby to kick-start a season stuck in neutral 
The Minho derby to snap an unlikely break
An enforced break is finally coming to an end. Braga have been without domestic action for three weeks after two straight league matches were postponed, and they have played just one Liga Portugal game since the season began.
Carlos Vicens’ side are back on Monday 31 August with a huge fixture: a red-hot Minho derby that could get things moving again.
First home game of the season at the Estadio Municipal
Kick-off is set for 20:15 local time (21:15 in France) at the Estadio Municipal de Braga, which holds 30 286.
It is a particularly big occasion because it will be their first home game of the season in front of their own fans.
Short of match sharpness on the domestic stage for close to a month, Braga will have to lift quickly in a derby that should be fiercely contested.
The second-round clash with Gil Vicente was postponed after a gastrointestinal infection swept through the squad. Their third-round meeting with Estrela Amadora was called off because of the European schedule.
That leaves Braga with one result on the board, a 2-2 draw at Moreirense, one point and 14th place. Of course, that hardly reflects the real level of last season’s fourth-placed side.
Vitoria de Guimaraes come in with three points from three matches and sit ninth. They ended a five-game losing run in the league last weekend.
The two Braga district neighbours meet in a rather odd setting: one is chasing games in hand, the other is still trying to prove a modest upturn is real.
Even so, the regional balance of power has been clear enough in recent years.
Vitoria are heading to a ground where they rarely get much joy, with the Guimaraes club winning only three of their last 10 visits to Braga in all competitions.
The last meeting on this pitch, back in February, went the hosts’ way after a lively 3-2 battle.
Braga strong in Europe, still quiet in the league 
Braga booked their place in the main Conference League phase by drawing 0-0 in Vienna against Austria. The 2-0 first-leg win in Minho had already done most of the damage.
It is the eighth straight year the club have reached an European group stage. It is also the least glamorous of that run, after seven seasons in the Champions League or Europa League.
Last season’s fourth-place finish was not enough to get them back into the Europa League, with Torreense’s cup win over Sporting changing the picture. The target this time is a place in the top three.
At the moment, the main strength is at the back: six clean sheets in seven official matches. All of them have come in Europe, so the domestic picture needs a little more context.
At home, the numbers are less pretty. Braga are on a run of three straight draws in their own stadium. Last season they picked up 30 points from 51 available at home, the sixth-best home record in the division.
The injury list is a nuisance. Sikou Niakate is still out after an Achilles tendon rupture, while summer signing Jonas Wind has yet to play a single minute since arriving.
Captain Ricardo Horta missed the last two games with a muscle issue and remains a doubt, as does Bright Arrey-Mbi, who has been sidelined for three matches with a thigh problem. Jovan Milosevic, who had a brief outing in Austria, could see more action.

Vitoria de Guimaraes revived by a win, but still shaky on the road 
Vitoria picked up their first win of the season last weekend, beating Nacional 1-0. Gustavo Silva struck early to seal the points for Tiago Margarido, the former Madeira club boss.
Margarido took over on 24 June 2026 after Gil Lameiras stepped back to the B team. His start was rough enough: opening-day defeat to Arouca, then nothing returned from Alvalade despite a battling display.
That win over Nacional ended a five-match losing streak in the league, stretching back to last season. The Conquistadores finished ninth, their worst placing in eight years.
The club have missed out on Europe for two seasons running. Getting back there needs a level of consistency they simply have not shown yet.
The big weakness remains away from home: 11 defeats in 17 league trips last season, the worst record in Liga Portugal. They also added four wins and two draws.
Their only away game this season, at Sporting in Lisbon, also ended in defeat. This trip to Minho looks no kinder.
Up front, Alioune Ndoye should again lead the line, with Gustavo Silva out wide. In goal, Oliwier Zych keeps his place, with youngster Gui Ribeiro still working his way back from an ACL injury.

Our prediction: Braga to win
Braga have kept six clean sheets in their last seven official matches. Against an attack that has produced only three goals in three rounds, that sort of defensive grip changes everything.
The gap on the pitch is clear: Vitoria have lost seven of their last 10 visits to Braga, including that 3-2 defeat in February. Add in last season’s worst away record in the division and the case gets even stronger.
The three-week enforced break should also help the home side, who come into this derby without a European game in their legs this week. Vitoria, meanwhile, have managed just one league win in five months.
The absences of Ricardo Horta and Bright Arrey-Mbi matter, but the quality gap still leans towards the Guerreiros do Minho. Back Braga to get it done.
