New Italian suitor enters the picture
The Derek Cornelius situation is moving in Marseille. According to Foot Mercato, Monza have set their sights on the 28-year-old Canadian defender, who is under contract with OM. The Lombardy club, back in Serie A this season, are watching for now, with no talks opened with Marseille.
The picture has shifted over the past few days. Sassuolo, long seen as the main contender, have dropped out after assessing the player, preferring other options to strengthen their centre-back pairing. Lecce are still keeping the file open, but they are not pushing hard, with the Apulia side focused on the arrivals of Ivan Ilic and Ali Dembele, both from Torino.

Juric wants reinforcements in every area
Monza’s interest makes sense when you look at the club’s internal timetable. Ivan Juric, appointed this summer on a deal running until 2028, asked for reinforcements in every department after the opening-day defeat to Inter. Centre-back is high on the list.
The Croatian knows exactly what Serie A demands, having managed Torino, Hellas Verona and Roma. For a newly promoted side, it is hardly an outrageous ask. The league punishes thin squads at the back, and the Italian press are already talking up several more arrivals at Monza.
Cornelius fits the brief. A Canada international, he brings experience and physical presence, two things a club fighting to stay up will always want.
Marseille keep trimming the squad
At OM, it is simple market logic. Brought in to shore up the defence, the Canadian has not fully convinced since signing. Marseille remain open to a move as part of a clear-out already under way, with several exits completed this summer and more still being worked on.
The preferred formula would be a loan with an option to buy, the standard setup when a club wants to ease the wage bill without cutting loose a player bought only a year ago.
Nothing is done yet. Sassuolo have stepped back, Lecce are watching and Monza have just joined the race. With the transfer window set to shut in the next few days, one of the three will need to move fast if Marseille are to get an answer.
