A shirt number that sends a message
Manchester United on Saturday released their squad numbers for the 2026/27 season, with Marcus Rashford handed the No 9 shirt.
That is no small detail. The England forward was back from a loan spell at Barcelona, where the Catalan club decided against triggering an option to buy worth an estimated 30 to 35 million euros. His future had been up in the air only a week ago. Giving that kind of shirt number to a player you are apparently trying to move on would be a strange call.
Michael Carrick has also been clear about his fitness in recent days. “Marcus is back in top shape,” the Red Devils boss said. The 28-year-old featured in the final pre-season match, a 4-2 defeat to AC Milan.

Charlton, Cole, Berbatov, Ibrahimovic
United’s No 9 comes with a heavy history. Bobby Charlton made it iconic in the 1960s, back when the club lifted their first European title. Andy Cole wore it during the Ferguson years, then Dimitar Berbatov, before Zlatan Ibrahimovic took it on in 2016.
Not many have come through it unscathed since. For years, the shirt has acted as a crude measure of United’s attacking recruitment, much of it badly judged over the last decade.
Rashford came through the club’s academy. He made his debut in 2016, on a Europa League night against Midtjylland, and scored twice. Ten years on, he has been given the number reserved for the strikers expected to carry the load.
A season of judgment
The backdrop is still uneasy. United have sealed the signing of Carlos Baleba for 82 million euros and are still reshaping the squad with only days left in the window.
Rashford, meanwhile, has no loan spell to hide behind now. With the No 9 on his back at Old Trafford, the only currency that matters is goals.
