Football: Usain Bolt laces up again with a Manchester vets side

Usain Bolt is back in football. The BBC reported on Saturday that the Jamaican has signed for Wythenshawe Vets FC, a club in south Manchester.

He is 40 now. He walked away from athletics in 2017. His dream of a pro career on the pitch never quite happened, despite high-profile trials in Australia and Norway.

This time, there is no pro deal to chase. Wythenshawe Vets FC play in the Cheshire Veterans Football League, a veterans competition.

A dressing room full of Premier League pedigree

Bolt is not joining a group of anonymous amateurs. The squad includes several former top-flight names.

Emile Heskey is one of them, the former Liverpool striker. Antonio Valencia too, the ex-Manchester United captain. Marc Albrighton, who won the 2016 Premier League title with Leicester, is also there, along with Papiss Cisse, who had a spell at Newcastle.

First the sprint, then the ball

The Jamaican’s record is still ridiculous: three-time Olympic champion over 100 metres and three-time Olympic champion over 200 metres. He pulled off the double at three straight Games.

Football, though, never quite gave him the same return. Now he’ll be playing a few miles from Old Trafford, on pitches that attract a lot less attention.
