Thirty-six holes, zero dropped shots
Wyndham Clark has played two rounds at Bellerive Country Club without a bogey on his card. He followed Thursday’s 64 with another one Friday and reached the halfway point of the BMW Championship at 12-under 128, one stroke clear of the field in St. Louis.
The number underneath the score is 31 of 36. That is Clark’s greens-in-regulation total for the week, the best of anyone in the field, and he has saved par from the sand on all three attempts. Three birdies going out, three coming back. The round had no fireworks and no leaks.
Clark arrived in Missouri fifth in the FedEx Cup standings after a two-win season that included his second U.S. Open, so Atlanta was never in doubt for him. What he wants is the trophy itself.
“Obviously majors are the No. 1, and then any time you can win any tournament’s big, but a signature event or a playoff event is massive,” Clark said. “I’ve been close in this event a couple times, so it would be nice to pull through and get a W.”

The bubble carries the real tension
Only the top 30 in the points race after Sunday advance to the season-ending Tour Championship, and there is no 36-hole cut at any of the three playoff events. That combination turns the weekend into a survival exercise for a specific group of players.
Gary Woodland sits No. 31, the first man outside the line. He birdied his final two holes for a 5-under 65 and second place at 11 under, and he described the round as a correction rather than a coast.
“I played nicely. I didn’t hit it as well as I did yesterday, where I was in complete control,” Woodland said. “The key for me was, I lost it a little bit on the back nine, lost some shots to the right, and I was able to adjust.”
J.J. Spaun sits third at 10 under after a 66. Sungjae Im matched Clark’s 64 to reach 9 under alongside Chris Gotterup, while Patrick Cantlay shot 65 to join Michael Thorbjornsen at 8 under. Im, Cantlay and Thorbjornsen all began the week outside the top 30, and the tour’s live standings currently project Thorbjornsen into the last qualifying spot with Cantlay stuck at No. 31.
Scheffler recovers, McIlroy slips
Scottie Scheffler opened with a 72 and responded with a 65, coming home in 5-under 30 to reach 3 under and a share of 25th. The world No. 1 credited the timing of his tee time as much as his swing, pointing to fresher greens in the morning.
Rory McIlroy went the other way. A 69 dropped him from a share of the first-round lead into a tie for eighth at 7 under, level with Collin Morikawa, Russell Henley and Maverick McNealy. Five shots back with two rounds left is recoverable at Bellerive. It also leaves Clark plenty of room to make it uncomfortable.
