Genoa vs Ascoli: the Grifone start their season with almost three months without a competitive match 
Genoa’s last competitive game came on 24 May, the final day of the 2025-26 Serie A season. Ascoli, meanwhile, played on 8 August in the preliminary round of the Italian Cup.
That gap in match sharpness is the first thing to factor in here. The Serie B side arrives with a game under its belt, while the Serie A club does not.
The tie is in the round of 32 and will be played at the Luigi Ferraris Stadium, with kick-off at 18:30, live on Italia 1. Genoa enter this stage so early because of where they finished last season.
They ended 16th in Serie A, their worst finish since returning to the top flight in 2022-23. Their campaign finished with no wins in the final five league matches, two draws and three defeats.
Ascoli, by contrast, come in on the back of promotion secured through the play-offs, after a 4-1 aggregate win over Union Brescia in the final. The Marches club then beat Potenza 3-1 to get here.
Daniele De Rossi, who took over in Genoa in November 2025, is heading into his first full season at the club. A win would matter for qualification, sure, but also for building momentum before the league opener against Napoli on 22 August.
On paper, the gap in divisions is obvious. In practice, the differing condition of the two teams makes this less straightforward than it first looks.

Two wins, one draw and two defeats in five warm-up games. Genoa’s summer form has hardly screamed confidence.
One of those defeats stood out for all the wrong reasons: a 10-1 drubbing by Bournemouth. That result raises awkward questions about the team’s defensive backbone with the season about to begin.
Even so, the club has kept hold of its key attacking piece in Lorenzo Colombo, Genoa’s top scorer in 2025-26 with seven goals. His permanent move from AC Milan was completed this summer.
In midfield, Djibril Sow arrived permanently from Sevilla, while Hamed Traore has joined on loan from Marseille. The Ivorian, though, is among those struggling physically.
The treatment room also includes Franz-Ethan Meichtry, Lorenzo Venturino and Joi Nuredini. Elias Havel, who missed the friendly against Deportivo La Coruna, could return sooner than expected.
Genoa have failed to go beyond the round of 16 in nine of their last 11 appearances in the competition, and they were dumped out 4-0 by Atalanta last season. Another early exit would be a hard sell.

Ascoli: a promoted side full of confidence, but facing a massive step up 
The 3-1 win over Potenza on 8 August is Ascoli’s only competitive reference point this summer. Not much, but still more than Genoa.
That victory came from behind, with Tommaso Milanese, Gabriele Gori and Giovanni Corradini all on the scoresheet. All three are available for this trip.
Before that, their build-up was tougher, with a 1-0 defeat to Frosinone and a 2-1 loss to Lazio. Two defeats against opposition of a higher standard.
It was in that Lazio match that the club lost right-back Manuel Alagna to a serious knee injury. Andrea Oliveri is set to fill the role.
Francesco Tomei’s transfer business has been modest, with loans for Giacomo De Pieri from Inter Milan and Sergiu Perciun from Torino. Targeted additions, not a spending spree.
The head-to-head record is not kind either: Ascoli have lost five of their last eight meetings with Genoa. They have also never reached the quarter-finals of the Italian Cup.
The one bright spot is their promoted status and the fact they have already had a proper competitive outing. That still usually isn’t enough to make up a division gap in a fixture like this.

The straight Genoa win is priced too short to take on its own, so the value lies elsewhere. The -1.5 handicap keeps the same basic read, just with a better return.
The division gap is still the main argument: Ascoli have stepped up from Serie B and have just been beaten by Frosinone and Lazio, two sides Genoa should be expected to handle on paper. The Grifone also keep last season’s top scorer Colombo, and they are at the Luigi Ferraris.
Genoa have won five of their last eight clashes with Ascoli, and they have no reason to drift through a game they ought to control before the league resumes. Two-goal margin or better for the home side.
