Bundesliga: Medina swaps Marseille for Leverkusen

One year in Marseille, then off to Germany

Facundo Medina is moving again. OM confirmed a few hours ago that the Argentina defender has signed for Bayer Leverkusen on a five-year deal. Leverkusen are paying 23 million euros, with another 2 million in add-ons.

His stay on the Canebiere lasted a single season. He came from Lens in the summer of 2025 for 20 million, and leaves with a modest profit on Marseille’s books. The timing suits OM.

The 27-year-old left-footer is coming off a stop-start year. An ankle problem sidelined him for months. Add it up and it comes to 17 Ligue 1 games and one assist. Not the run needed to leave a mark.

An OM squad shedding wages

The sale lines up with what Marseille need. No Champions League football means the belt has to tighten. This summer, nobody is off limits.

Medina joins a lengthening list of departures. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is gone to La Coruna. Mason Greenwood left for Fenerbahce at 39 million, though Marseille pocket only 23.4 of it. Geronimo Rulli is off to Manchester City. For now, OM’s window is written almost entirely in outgoings.

A World Cup runner-up with Argentina, beaten 1-0 by Spain, Medina lands in a defence that is already busy. Leverkusen have just brought in Miguel Gutierrez and spent close to 30 million on Afonso Moreira. He will be fighting for a shirt from the first session.

A gamble on both ends

Leverkusen are betting on a player they scouted a year ago. Marseille bank the fee and clear a spot. What nobody knows yet is whether the Argentine can climb back to the form that built his name at Lens, before the ankle knocked his OM spell off course.
