NFL: Larry Fitzgerald thanks all of Arizona after Hall of Fame nod

A letter instead of a speech

Larry Fitzgerald is a Pro Football Hall of Famer. The induction came Saturday in Canton. The next day, the former Arizona Cardinals receiver skipped the podium and set the microphone aside. He bought a full-page ad in the Arizona Republic instead, and used it to thank an entire state.

The piece reads like anything but a dry statement. Fitzgerald tells the story of a 20-year-old kid landing from Minnesota, knowing nobody. He circles back to the day he arrived, when the country was learning of the death of Pat Tillman, the former Cardinal who left the game for the military. “For seventeen seasons, I measured myself quietly against the standard set by Pat Tillman,” he wrote.

Seventeen years, one jersey

The connection matters. Taken third overall in the 2004 draft, Fitzgerald spent his whole career in Arizona. Seventeen seasons, one club, a loyalty that barely exists in the modern game.

The numbers do the talking. 1,432 catches, 17,492 yards, 121 touchdowns, eleven Pro Bowl selections. He sits second all-time in catches and yards, behind only Jerry Rice. In touchdowns he ranks sixth, behind Rice, Randy Moss, Terrell Owens, Chris Carter and Marvin Harrison. Serious company.

Belonging before silverware

What stands out in the letter is the shift in focus. Fitzgerald barely mentions football. He writes about Camelback Mountain at daybreak, summers in Flagstaff, the red rocks of Sedona. He writes about the moment Arizona stopped being the place he lived and became the place he came from.

“You never asked me to be anything other than myself,” he wrote, signing off with a plain “Larry Fitzgerald, HOF 26.” The bronze bust will stay in Canton. The rest, clearly, stayed in the desert.
