Denis Shapovalov wanted a statement on home soil. He got an early exit instead. The Canadian retired in the third set of his first-round match against Zachary Svajda at the Canadian Open in Montreal.

He had been running on fumes from a crowded calendar, straight off a final last week in Los Cabos, where the ankle first flared up. Down 6-4, 4-6, 0-3, he shut it down.
