Titans vs Cowboys: Queensland derby with plenty at stake 
With the finals coming into view, Round 23 of the NRL kicks off with a highly anticipated Queensland derby between the Gold Coast Titans and the North Queensland Cowboys. The teams may be sitting where they are in the table, but write this one off at your peril. There is enough firepower on both sides to make this a fast, open contest at Cbus Super Stadium.
For the Cowboys, the push for the top eight is still alive, but the margin for error is shrinking fast. As for the Titans, the aim is simpler: build some confidence in front of their own fans and carry a bit of momentum into next season.
With four of their last five games at home, the Titans have a chance to make life awkward for the teams chasing a finals spot.

The Titans had been in decent form, with three wins from their previous five outings, before they were blown away at home by the Warriors (42-6). Outplayed in every area, Gold Coast never found a way to slow the onslaught.
The numbers are ugly: just 42% possession, messy sets and only one try. But the real concern is at the back, where they missed 48 tackles and conceded more than 10 metres per carry.
If they want to avoid another letdown, the Titans need to rediscover the discipline and teamwork that had been carrying them in recent weeks.

Cowboys seeking a response 
It was a night to remember for all the wrong reasons. The home hammering by the Roosters (82-12) left Todd Payten’s side reeling after conceding 14 tries. They couldn’t set the tempo, couldn’t hold the middle, and were simply steamrollered.
Even after that collapse, and with some worrying defensive figures still hanging over them (41 missed tackles, 11.1 metres conceded per carry), the season is not over. Their run-in looks kinder than most, with only teams below them left to face.
A strong reply is expected on Thursday, as they try to put the embarrassment behind them and keep their September hopes alive.
An attack-minded derby
Both defences looked vulnerable last time out, but the attacking talent on display can still produce fireworks. In a game where both sides badly need a lift, the pace should crank up quickly.
The Cowboys have to keep scoring if they want to stay in the hunt, while the Titans will be aiming to put on a show for their home crowd in this local showdown.
