Sabalenka rides out an early scare
Aryna Sabalenka dropped her opening service game and trailed Moyuka Uchijima 2-0 on Tuesday. The world No. 1 did not panic. She reeled off five games in a row to take the first set, then steadied a choppy second set to win 6-3, 6-3 in the Round of 64 in Toronto.
The numbers pointed to a player still shaking off rust. Sabalenka served six double faults and converted six of her 11 break chances. Toronto remains one of four WTA 1000 titles missing from her collection, and she has not reached the semi-finals here since 2021.

Swiatek starts fast, then digs in
Iga Swiatek looked untouchable for 45 minutes. The seventh seed raced to a 6-0, 3-0 lead over Sara Bejlek before the Czech woke up and turned the match into a scrap. Swiatek needed another three quarters of an hour to shut the door, 6-0, 6-3.
“There were for sure a few tricky games, especially the long one,” Swiatek said. “I haven’t played a game like that in some time, so I’m happy that I won it.” She saved 10 of the 11 break points she faced and is chasing a first Canadian crown after her lone semi-final run in 2023.
Seeds hold, one big upset
Elina Svitolina and Marta Kostyuk both came through, while Australian Talia Gibson produced the shock of the day by bouncing 18th seed Maja Chwalinska 7-5, 6-1. Amanda Anisimova advanced via walkover, and the draw thinned further as Jelena Ostapenko and Katerina Siniakova retired hurt.
