Milan finds the gap in Koszalin

Nearly tenth wheel with the line in sight, Jonathan Milan still won. The Italian national champion threaded a chaotic bunch sprint in Koszalin today to take stage 1 of the Tour de Pologne and the first leader’s jersey.

Paul Magnier stuck to him longest and settled for second. Noah Hobbs came late for third after an EF Education-EasyPost surge. Milan’s final kick up a short rise to the line put two bike lengths between him and the rest.

A first win at this race

It is Milan’s first career stage victory at the Tour de Pologne, one more line on a sprint record that already includes multiple Giro d’Italia wins and a points title there. The stage ran 234.2 kilometres across northern Poland, flat and long, and the finish still turned messy.

The day’s breakaway never had the legs. The peloton swept up the last move and caught lone rider Dries De Bondt just after the final corner. Then the trains took over, roads narrowing, positions changing by the second.

Onto stage 2

Stage 2 covers 150.1 kilometres from Międzyzdroje to Szczecin, shorter and flatter still. Milan defends the lead. Magnier will be back for another go.
