NBA: Hezonja returns to Cleveland after six years away

A return after six years away from the NBA

Mario Hezonja is back in the NBA. The Croatian has signed a one-year deal with the Cleveland Cavaliers, ESPN reports. The agreement is believed to be worth around $2.8 million. He had not played in the league since the 2019-2020 season.

The No. 5 pick in the 2015 draft, Hezonja spent the last six years in EuroLeague. Four of them came at Real Madrid, where he rediscovered his game. He won the EuroLeague title in 2023, then picked up Liga ACB MVP honours in 2025-2026 with averages of 17.5 points and 4.9 rebounds.

Cleveland beats Golden State to the punch

The Warriors were also in the mix. Cleveland moved first. The Cavaliers are looking to build on last season’s trip to the Eastern Conference finals, their first since 2018.

Hezonja’s NBA record is still fairly modest. Portland, Orlando, New York: 330 games, 69 starts, and 6.9 points per game on 41.7% shooting. Real got him back on track. Now he has to prove it again in the big league.
