DC United vs Toronto FC : a battle where every point matters 
The push for the play-offs rolls on in the Eastern Conference, and this one could matter a lot in the coming weeks. DC United still hold a slim cushion over the chasing pack, but one slip could quickly put their top-nine spot under pressure.
Toronto head to Washington knowing they can get almost level with their opponents. The Canadians have looked steadier since the league resumed, even if the cutting edge still isn’t really there.
DC United are edging forward 
A few weeks ago, things looked far more worrying for the capital club. The results are still a long way from perfect, but Rene Weiler has made his side harder to beat. Just one defeat in their last nine MLS matches shows DC can now stay in games, even when not much is going right.
The attack still lacks consistency. Tai Baribo is in a decent spell and remains the main threat in front of goal, but clear chances are still few and far between. When the opposition press shuts down the passing lanes in midfield, DC often struggle to get moving.
At Audi Field, games are rarely wide open. The Black and Red usually try to control space first and break forward later. It can blunt their attacking threat, but it also stops things turning into a track meet.
Toronto are banking on discipline 
Toronto’s last two matches both ended with clean sheets. That is probably no accident. Robin Fraser has clearly asked his side to sit deeper and take fewer risks when building from the back. The results are not exactly electric, but the team looks a lot more organised.
Away from home, the issue has been the same all season. Toronto create very little and lack a real presence in the box. Jonathan Osorio and Theo Corbeanu are heavily involved in the play, but there are simply not enough dangerous moments to turn matches their way.
Against a direct rival, the visitors are likely to stick with the same cautious plan. A point would not be a bad return, and everything points to organisation first, attack second.

Toronto come into it off back-to-back clean sheets and have not conceded since the league restarted, while DC United have one of the weakest attacks among the teams still in the play-off mix.
The visitors still struggle badly on the road. They create very little in terms of real danger, and their away trips often turn into tight, cautious affairs where both sides wait for the other to make the first mistake.
The match context only strengthens that feeling. Neither coach can afford to leave too much space in a game this important to the standings. A narrow home win or a draw with just one side scoring looks the most likely outcome.
