Columbus Crew vs New York City FC : a key clash in the playoff race 
MLS is back with a fixture that already matters in the Eastern Conference. Columbus are sitting in 10th, just outside the playoff spots, while New York City FC hold a slender edge in the standings. A win would pull Crew level with their opponents and give their push for the postseason a proper kickstart.
The two sides had already met in the US Open Cup before the break, with Columbus coming out on top. This one should look very different, though, with both teams needing points to keep pace with the pack.
Columbus look to build on their recent uptick 
The pause may have come at the wrong time for Crew. After three straight league defeats, Laurent Courtois’ side had finally steadied themselves with a draw against Philadelphia and a 2-0 win over Atlanta United.
At home, the numbers are much more encouraging. Columbus have won three of their last four in front of their own fans and have long done well against New York City in Ohio, with seven wins in the last ten meetings at this ground.
Diego Rossi’s departure means the team now has to find new attacking answers. Wessam Abou Ali, Max Arfsten and Daniel Gazdag will carry more of the load as Crew try to keep creating problems in the final third.
New York City need to travel better 
New York City’s first half of the season has been defined by a lack of consistency on the road. Pascal Jansen’s men have won only two of their seven away matches and have taken just one point from their last five MLS games outside home.
Their struggles in front of goal explain plenty of that. NYCFC have scored only six away goals since the season began, a modest return considering the quality in the squad. Nicolas Mercau remains a constant threat, though, and has shouldered much of the attacking burden with ten goals already.
Matt Freese is expected to keep his place in goal, which brings some security, but uncertainty around Talles Magno and Keaton Parks still limits the options. The visitors will need to be sharper if they want to leave Ohio with anything.

Both teams to score
Columbus look to have found their footing again before the break and are especially strong at home. Crew have enough attacking quality to trouble a New York City side that has not always been reliable away from home.
The visitors still have enough to answer back. Nicolas Mercau is having an excellent season and can punish any gaps left by a Columbus defence that had conceded three goals in three straight matches before its recent improvement.
The pressure on the standings should push both teams forward. Columbus will chase the three points to draw level with their opponents, while NYCFC cannot afford to sit back and hope for the best. A goal each feels like the most likely outcome.
