Mexico vs Ecuador : the hosts want to keep their perfect run going
The group stage is history now. This is where every mistake can send you home. Mexico return to their own fans on the back of a flawless campaign, while Ecuador arrive with some freedom after sealing qualification on the final day thanks to a statement win over Germany. This clash between two sides on very different paths should be a proper battle for a place in the last 16.
Mexico are proving they belong among the contenders
It is hard to imagine a more controlled group stage. Three games, three wins and not a single goal conceded : Mexico have every reason to be confident heading into the knockout rounds. After brushing past South Africa, Javier Aguirre’s men showed patience against South Korea before finishing with a convincing win over Czechia.
That steel is not just about the back line. Julian Quinones brings real movement up front, Raul Jimenez should come back into the starting XI and the Mexican midfield sets a tempo that leaves opponents with little room to breathe. In front of more than 80,000 supporters expected at the Azteca, Mexico will look to stretch a six-match winning run.
Ecuador have found their confidence at just the right time
For a long time, Ecuador’s campaign looked stuck in the mud. Beaten by Ivory Coast and then unable to break down Curacao despite dominating the game, La Tri were staring at a final-day shootout for qualification. Their response against Germany changed the mood of the tournament.
Trailed early, Sebastian Beccacece’s side turned the match around through Nilson Angulo and Gonzalo Plata. It was a reminder of what this team can do when it presses high and wins the ball back quickly. Pedro Vite has emerged as one of the key men in midfield, while Enner Valencia remains a constant threat as he closes in on his 50th international goal.
Expected line-ups :
Mexico : Rangel; Sanchez, Montes, Vasquez, Gallardo; Lira, Romo, Gutierrez; Alvarado, Jimenez, Quinones
Ecuador : Galindez; Franco, Ordonez, Pacho, Hincapie; Yeboah, Caicedo, Vite, Angulo; Plata, Valencia

World Cup 2026 prediction : Mexico vs Ecuador
Mexico to win in 90 minutes
Mexico have looked in control from the start of the tournament. Javier Aguirre’s side are one of the few teams to have won all three group games without conceding, while also showing plenty of variety in the final third. Backed by their own crowd, El Tri are notoriously hard to beat at home, where they have lost only once at a World Cup as hosts.
Ecuador arrive with momentum after their upset over Germany, but that result came after two much rougher outings. The South Americans still need to raise their level to bring down a Mexico side that gives up very few chances and handles sticky spells well. In a game that could stay tight for a long time, home advantage, current form and El Tri’s defensive strength point towards a Mexico win inside 90 minutes.
in your pocket.

First, a word on our predictions
- What we publish on mathodds is analysis, nothing more. We share an opinion, a read on the moment, but never a guarantee. Sport is what it is: unpredictable. A red card, an injury, a freak goal out of nowhere… and the script changes completely.
- Let’s be clear: there is no risk-free bet. Even when something looks obvious, it never really is. And yes, that means you can lose. In fact, you will at some point.
- The best approach is to stay sensible. Bet small, set a budget and stick to it. Don’t touch money you need to live on. And above all: don’t chase losses, it rarely ends well.
- A bet should stay a bit of fun, not a job and not a source of income. If you feel it is taking up too much space in your day, irritating you or putting you under pressure, take a break. And if needed, speak to a specialist support service. That’s what it’s there for.
- At the end of the day, the responsibility is yours. Reading our content means accepting that risk exists and will never disappear, even with the best analysis in the world.
- Essential reminder: betting is banned for minors and must comply with the law in your country. Gambling can quickly get out of hand (money losses, family tension, addiction). Need Help? Call 1-800-GAMBLER. In the UK? Visit https://www.gambleaware.org/https://www.gambleaware.org/.
No commitment from us
Our predictions are not a contract. They have no legal force. In plain English: you cannot use them to demand anything if a bet fails.
Information changes
A prediction is always based on what we know at the time of writing. But by the time you read it, a line-up may have changed, a player may be injured, the weather may have turned… and the analysis can quickly be out of date. We cannot be held responsible for that.
Your role
Before you bet, just check that betting is legal where you are. If it isn’t, that is your responsibility, not ours.
Responsible gambling comes first
