Spurs vs Knicks: San Antonio back in the hot seat for a high-stakes Game 5NBA logo et symbole, sens, histoire, PNG, marque

These NBA Finals looked like they were tilting San Antonio’s way for most of Game 4. Backed by their crowd and holding a lead of almost 30 at the break, the Spurs had a golden chance to level the series before heading back to New York. Instead, it all fell apart in a surreal second half. The Knicks produced the biggest comeback in Finals history and now sit one win from the title.

Back in San Antonio, Game 5 takes on a different feel. For the Spurs, it’s no longer just about staying alive. They also have to pick themselves up after a collapse that could linger. New York, meanwhile, know another win would bring a first championship in more than half a century. The pressure has plainly shifted.

For two and a half quarters, San Antonio had actually turned in its best performance of the series. Victor Wembanyama was bullying the paint in the first half, the outside shots were dropping and the ball movement kept New York on the back foot. Then the wheels came off. Turnovers piled up, the shooting vanished and doubt spread possession by possession.

This young group probably had a hand in the breakdown. Wembanyama, Castle and Harper are still learning what this level demands. A loss like that leaves a mark, no question, but it can also teach a lesson. The Spurs have shown over four games they can go toe to toe with New York. The real question now isn’t tactical. It’s mental.

There is also a clear pattern through this series: San Antonio starts fast. The Texans have regularly grabbed control early thanks to their perimeter shooting and their bite on both ends (the Spurs on these NBA Finals, in the first half: 35/83 – 42.2% versus only 16/66 – 24.2% in the second halves). Even after the trauma of Game 4, it would not be a shock to see them come out swinging in front of their own fans.

New York once again showed why this team has become one of the toughest to knock out in these playoffs. When it looked lost, Jalen Brunson kept them afloat before OG Anunoby turned in what may have been the biggest night of his career. The defensive tweaks after the break completely changed the game.

Beyond the result, the Knicks showed that same refusal to panic. They have already hauled themselves out of trouble several times in these playoffs and seem to have a remarkable collective belief. Karl-Anthony Towns delivered when it mattered, while a few bench pieces chipped in just as San Antonio started to wobble. With a 3-1 lead in the series, Mike Brown’s men still have a safety net. It is hard to imagine them not at least easing off a touch after such a huge win, especially with the chance to wrap things up at Madison Square Garden still there. That slight drop could be enough for the Spurs to strike first.

NBA Prediction: Spurs vs Knicks

San Antonio Spurs to win the 1st quarter

Game 4 left scars, but don’t forget what the Spurs showed for more than 30 minutes. Throughout this Finals series, San Antonio has often started on the front foot, helped by far better shooting from deep before the break. The gap between their three-point success in the first and second halves sums it up neatly.

The mental weight of that loss is more likely to show later in the game. Early on, buoyed by the home crowd and fuelled by a sense of revenge, the Spurs have the tools to start fast again. New York, for its part, might subconsciously manage its energy with the thought that a possible Game 6 back at Madison Square Garden is still the ideal outcome. In that context, San Antonio leading after 12 minutes looks a very appealing call (the Spurs have won the 1st quarter in all four games of the series).

Before anything else, a quick note on our picks

  • What we publish on mathodds is analysis, nothing more. We share an opinion, a read on the moment, but never a guarantee. Sport is what it is: unpredictable. A red card, an injury, a freak goal from nowhere… and the whole script changes.
  • Let’s be clear: there is no such thing as a risk-free bet. Even when something looks “certain”, it never really is. And yes, that means you can lose. At some point, you will.
  • The smart move is to keep things sensible. Bet small, set a budget and stick to it. Don’t touch money you need to live on. And above all: don’t chase losses, because that rarely ends well.
  • A bet should stay a game, not a job and not a source of income. If you feel it’s taking over your day, making you angry or putting you under pressure, take a break. And if needed, speak to a specialist support service. That’s what it’s there for.
  • In the end, the responsibility is yours. Reading our content means accepting that risk exists and will never disappear, even with the best analysis in the world.
  • Important reminder: betting is not allowed for minors and must follow the law in your country. Gambling can spiral fast (money losses, family tension, addiction). Need Help? Call 1-800-GAMBLER. In the UK? Visit https://www.gambleaware.org/https://www.gambleaware.org/.

No commitment from us

Our picks are not a contract. They have no legal force. In plain English: you cannot use them to demand anything if a bet loses.

Information can change

A prediction is always based on what we know when it is written. But in the meantime, a team news update changes, a player gets hurt, the weather turns… and the analysis can quickly go stale. We cannot be held responsible for that.

Your responsibility

Before betting, make sure gambling is legal where you are. If it isn’t, that’s on you, not us.
